Wilwatta Retreat in Mirigama

This beautiful property has been a family home for generations. The guest space is situated in a detached unit just outside the main house. Originally a paddy storage room, this unique structure features three foot-thick walls and windows opening out to the surrounding greenery. The unit has been recently renovated to include a cozy loft, verandah, and pantry counter. The room has an attached bathroom with hot water. Breakfast is provided and lunch/dinner can be arranged at an additional cost. The space I have four dogs who are part of the family and roam free in the garden. Please note that there is no way to separate the dogs from the guest premises so if you are not a dog lover this may not be the place for you. The dogs are not at all aggressive. They will leave you alone if you ignore them, or come to be petted if encouranged. The stunning and peaceful environment is what makes this home special. The house is located on a beautiful plot of land surrounded by lush greenery, complete with a few small ponds. This is a haven for animal lovers. You can expect to see all types of birds, butterflies, insects, lizards and the occasional snake or water monitor. This is a wonderful place to appreciate the natural beauty and biodiversity of Sri Lanka but we kindly ask that you treat the animals with care and respect. Guest access In addition to the private and separate living and sleeping space guests can also make arrangements with the host to access the large kitchen in the main house. This is working kitchen where typical Sri Lankan meals are prepared on a daily basis. Special arrangements can be made for cooking demonstrations or lessons. The extensive garden space is also open to guests and is ideal for relaxing with a cup of tea. The space is a perfect retreat for artists, writers or anyone who is looking for a place to unleash their creativity. There are plenty of corners for yoga and meditation and a professional yoga instructor can be arranged if needed. The space is also great for a small family. This is an idea place for kids to enjoy nature through (supervised!) exploration of the garden. The rustic outdoor well is a perfect place to cool off on a hot day. Other things to note The property is located close to the Mirigama town and is around 1 km away from the Mirigama Railway Station, where you can catch the train to Colombo or other major cities. The main bus stations are walking distance from the house. The host is also happy to arrange a tuk-tuk with Nandana, a friendly local driver known to the family. He will be happy to show you around the area and take you to some of the local sites.
