Building History The Mechanics House is a significant part of the town's history, reflecting its vibrant past. It was meticulously restored using authentic local materials, showcasing original weatherboards and ironbark floorboards. A datum rail inside was skilfully crafted from recycled floorboards sourced from the original dance hall. The bathroom once housed the Australian-made Lister motor and copper generator, alongside the original fuses and power board. At its core, the house features a wooden insert that covers the original vehicle maintenance pit. The surrounding stone retaining wall is made from Brooman River Stones, and the steps to the rear verandah are constructed from Brooman silt stone. Off-Grid Living The property is completely off-grid and powered by a central solar system with underground 240V power. Water comes from the pristine rain collected and stored in galvanised iron tanks. Hot water is heated by an instantaneous gas water heater located on the outside of the building. Brooman Features The old town site is set opposite a large bend in the Clyde River. The deep water extends for nearly a kilometre upstream, making it a great place for canoeing, fishing for Bass, Platypus watching, or simply listening to the dozens of unique and beautiful endemic bird species of this area. There is a resident mob of Eastern Grey Kangaroos that typically comes out at dusk. You may also spot Red-Necked Wallabies, Bandicoots, microbats, blue-tongued lizards, and Possums. The buildings date back to the late 1800s to early 1900s, once supporting a thriving community of up to 200 people. Brooman had a post office, school, dance hall, mechanics building, galley, general store, phone exchange, and cottages like this one. Quality Linens and Towels We understand the importance of fresh, soft linens and fluffy towels. You'll find both provided in your room, adding a touch of luxury to your stay. Guest access Drive in from the front gate at the old town - the Managers House is first on your left, then the Machines is to the right with the Dance Hall on the other side. You may park in front of the Mechanics House. You are able to park two cars directly in front. Getting to the Brooman from Termeil NOTE: Don't trust Google! It has a habit of sending people the long way, or down a dead end track behind Boulder Mtn. The simplest way to reach Brooman is via Termeil on the Princes Highway. Turn up the Old Princes Highway at the BP petrol station and follow the sealed road for approximately 2km until you reach Middle Ridge Rd turn off to the right. Follow Middle Ridge for approx 8km until you reach the T-intersection with The River Rd and Brooman Rd. There are numerous side tracks turning off Middle Ridge - stay on the main dirt road. When you reach the T-intersection turn left and follow for just under 2km till you drive around a bend and see the river on your right and Brooman Managers House on your left. Alternative Routes (mostly tar or blue metal road) From Sydney/Nowra - When you reach Milton, turn right onto Myrtle St, then right again onto Croobyar Rd. Follow Croobyar - which becomes Woodstock Rd - for approximately 19km till you reach Brooman Rd. (Woodstock Rd becomes a dirt road just past the Clyde Ridge Rd turn off). Follow Brooman Rd for roughly 8km where it turns left at the signed junction of Carisbrook Rd and Poison Box Rd. Turning down Brooman Rd you will cross a new concrete bridge over Tumblebar Ck. Keep following Brooman Road till it becomes The River Road where you pass the Middle Ridge Road turn off and a sign post that points to "Brooman". Staying on The River Road towards Brooman you will soon see the Clyde River on your right and buildings of the the old saw mill town on your left. From Canberra/Braidwood - (two options before Nelligen) At the bottom of the Clyde Mountain turn left onto Black Flat Rd and follow for approximately 6km until you reach The River Rd, then turn left. (Alternatively you can turn left off the highway onto The River Rd just before Nelligen - it's a more winding road but runs along the river. Follow The River Road for roughly 8km from the intersection with Black Flat Rd, first over Currowan Ck until you reach Shallow Crossing - which is tidal. On king high tides during full moon, Shallow Crossing can be too deep to pass. High tide at Shallow Crossing is about an hour after high tide in Batemans Bay. From Shallow Crossing, stay on The River Rd for roughly 9km towards Brooman. Go past Burroman Flat, the main shed on your left and not far before the Old Town you will see a gateway on your left into the Festival Flats.
