Description
Seclusion, stargazing, wildlife, relaxation and adventure. Headwaters Retreat is a habitat restoration site deep in the Plumas National Forest. Our outfitter tent is tucked into a 4 acre grove of timber that survived the Dixie Fire, within the larger 120 acre private property. Off-grid and many miles from civilized development, Headwaters offers a semi-permanent tent, Star Link, a grill, wood-fired heat and porta-potty so you don't have to poop in the woods :) Discounts for 5+ nights. The space Access: A 4-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle is absolutely recommended to access the property. You will be driving National Forest Roads (unpaved, unmaintained) for a minimum of 10 miles and up to 30 miles, depending on what direction you come from. Traveling during daylight is recommended. Obstructions (fire killed trees) may be on the road, so pull-straps, cables and/or chain saw are suggested tools to carry traveling in/out. The property: 120 acres of natural forestland which was mostly burned in the Dixie Fire of 2021. This is a habitat and forest restoration project where we are planting and seeding 30+ different species of shrubs, grasses and forbs while protecting and enhancing the riparian, meadow, upland and forest zones of the property. Wildlife: Numerous birds including raptors and mountain quail, small mammals, larger wildlife such as deer, elk, bear, coyote, mountain lion, gray wolf, bobcat, and many small critters such as insects, spider and reptiles and lastly the occasional range cattle (moooo cows) are in the area and cross the property. The Outfitter Tent: during the months that Headwaters Retreat is available for guests to visit, we set up an "outfitter tent" from Davis Tent & Canopy, which features a rain-fly over the top and a covered porch area as well. The tent is set on a raised wood platform for stability, and features a wood burning stove inside with warming plate and hot-water tank. The tent works great for up to 4 people. We provide 2 single cots with foam cushions, and 1 double aero-bed (deflated) for you to use in whatever arrangement is best for you. Bring linens, blankets, sleeping bags and pillows to make things as comfortable as you desire. Water: While the creeks flow very nicely much of the year, the most reliable water source will be that which you bring in. We recommend 2 gallons per person per day for consumption and basic hygiene, especially during July-September when daytime temps can be quite warm. Recreation: - Relax, enjoy silence punctuated by birds, toads, and breezes in the trees. - Full moon walks or dark sky stargazing. There is almost zero light pollution at the Headwaters Retreat. Take advantage of that. - Mtn bike or drive the many miles of forest roads connecting throughout Plumas National Forest. - Do some off-trail, cross-country hiking to explore Stony Ridge, the upper reaches of Cottonwood Creek and Cottonwood Peak. - Scout for big game, even if you're not a hunter! If you're moving slow and looking near & far, there's a good chance you'll see critters. - Hunting (in season, with tags & license)... Headwaters Retreat puts you in the middle of 1000s of acres of public land, in the X6A zone for mule deer and on the eastern edge of the black bear hunting zone. Upland game (quail) are abundant. ATV/UTV/OHV/4-wheeling: any all motorized travel is expressly prohibited on the Headwaters Retreat property. Please take advantage of the hundreds of miles of Forest Roads that connect to and through the access roads into Headwaters Retreat. Safety: this is a remote, secluded wildland property being managed primarily for wildlife habitat and forest biodiversity. The property is mostly level to gently sloped terrain (easy) with numerous and changing natural hazards throughout. Safe enjoyment will be a result of good decisions, situational awareness, planning, preparation and packing for the conditions. AT&T and Verizon service may be available within 1-mile of the property, and Star Link service is expected but cannot be guaranteed. Wi-fi: Headwaters retreat is setup with a portable solar (400W) system, Eco Flo battery and Starlink. With normal use, and typical sunny weather May through October the system will be powered up to give you wifi service in the immediate area of the Headwaters Retreat itself. Wifi will not cover the entire property - it is simply too much land! Checking in / Checking out: We want to know that you arrived safely, and when you're ready to leave the Headwaters Retreat. We will provide some detailed but simple instructions for communicating with the host when your group arrives and departs. E-bikes: all cycles with any form of power (motor or engine) must adhere to OHV/ATV/UTV off-road rules listed above. Other things to note We don't have a cleaning fee!!! How is that possible? It starts with guests and host (me) working together. Headwaters Retreat is remote and secluded which we love - and you will too. That means arranging "cleaners" is unrealistic. Since we're not providing things like linens, towels, dishware, a bathroom and shower, etc.. we offer the Retreat on a "Housekeeping" basis. This means that each guests is tasked with leaving everything as clean and organized as when they arrived. Our arrival and departure instructions will be super simple, too. Leave no trace. Leave clean and ready.
