Description

Welcome to one of the oldest homes in Mount Hope. This house was built in 1910 as the home and office for the doctor that served the people living in "The little town with a big welcome". James and Lucy Wilkins purchased this home in 1940. James was the accountant for the New River Coal Company having moved to the area in 1920s. This home has been restored to its original appearance reflecting the styles of the Victorian / Art Nouveau eras. Come and step back in time in this unique home. The space This vintage home is located on the original bypass road between Beckley and Oak Hill / Fayetteville. The home is less than a 10 minute drive from modern highway 19 and Interstate 77, if you need a convenient place to sleep if you are just passing through the area. If you are planning an extended stay, many of the area attractions including The New River National Park, The Summit HIgh Adventure Camp and Winterplace Ski Resort are all less than 30 minutes away. This home has vintage architectural features of decorative plaster walls / ceilings, floral wallpaper, high/ tin ceilings and wood floors. The home is furnished with most of the original antique furniture and accessories. The walls are adorned with its original pictures and WWI and WWII war bond posters. Take particular note of the Victory Garden poster in the kitchen. James and Lucy Wilkins won the Mount Hope Community Victory Garden contests for three years during WWII providing vegetables to the war effort to feed our men and women soldiers. Guest access The entire upper level of the house is open for your pleasure. Enjoy your coffee on the back screened-in porch surrounded by the native foliage and a visit from a resident deer population. Unwind in the library, where you can select from a variety of reading materials on many Americana topics. Select a book for the children's section for a special bedtime story time. Experience the home life amenities of an earlier time era from sleeping in antique beds or eating in a formal dining room. Turn on one of the vintage radios to listen to a local radio station or sync your cell phone via bluetooth to the small radio in the dining room to enjoy you own song playlist. There is a smart TV located in the living room. The TV has been mounted in the original mirror frame that hung above the fireplace mantel. There are several streaming stations available for your enjoyment. Other things to note A few items that you should be aware of if you choose to stay in our home: 1. Expect some vehicle noise, due to the house's location on a local road. The traffic noise does significantly diminish in the evening. 2. The washer and dryer is located in an unfinished basement. The use of the washer and dryer is available for use upon request. The door to the basement is kept locked, but a key for access is available. Please note that this basement in NOT "child proof" and we would request that children not be allowed in the basement. 3. A grill is located on the back porch. Please roll the grill to the outside deck for use. Return the grill back to its location, once you have completed your cooking and the grill has cooled off.
