Sooty Babe Cottage is within walking distance to the Blackhall beach cliff tops. Two minutes walk to the views of the Durham Heritage coasts and the Hartlepool estuary. Blackhall beach is only 10 to 15 minutes down to the beach, depending on route. Access is via the road over the bridge from 11th Street. You have a choice of continuing on the road down to the estuary, or turn right into the industrial estates and then left into the road to the allotments and left along the clifftop edge of the Durham Heritage Coast until you come to some steps when you see the estuary which is where the river meets the sea. Looking inland the viaduct is clearly visible, dominating the landscape, straddling the Castle Eden Dene burn. Which runs the full 3.5-mile length of the nature reserve. Ideal for walks and jogging along the river. This nature reserve covers 221 hectares of woodland and lowland grassland and is the largest of a series of valleys which run down to the coast between Sunderland and Hartlepool, reaching the sea at Denemouth. Both routes down to the estuary give you a view of the coast from a vehicle, with some parking available on the road down towards the estuary, or outside the allotment carpark towards the cliffs. Standing on the Blackhall cliff tops looking towards the North, one can see the cliff tops of the Lime Kiln beach at Horden, beyond that Fox Hole Dene which is wheelchair accessible. Then the slopes of SSSI the Site of Special Scientific Interest at Easington. The coves there are hidden from view, likewise Seaham harbour and marina are just out of sight, but you can see the South port side of Sunderland. Which looks lovely when illuminated at night. Looking to the South from the clifftops you can see the wind turbines in the North Sea between Hartlepool and Redcar, and on the horizon on a good day the rather imposing Hunt cliff at Saltburn by the Sea in North Yorkshire. There is a third beach access down some rather large, sometimes muddy steps to Blackhall beach, leading to Blackhall Rocks Local Nature Reserve and Crimdon beach depending on the tide, the skeleton of the Steeley pier, and the Hartlepool headland beyond. Crimdon beach is a designated bathing beach popular with swimmers in the Summer with holiday parks backing the beach. Views from the top are good for those less able to walk. The harbour at Seaham is particularly good for those wishing for a more sheltered location for swimming and paddle boarding. Again good for those less able to walk. Usually you can see the lucky number of seven tankers moored out at sea waiting to go into the port at Hartlepool. Sometimes you can see yachts travelling towards the stunning Hartlepool marina. with cafes, restaurants and nightlife. Which is near to the old town centre with more venues. Blackhall Colliery also offers a wide range of shops and takeaways, there are two hotels with similar names, the Hardwick hotel in the village that only serves drinks, the other is the Hardwicke Hall Manor Hotel 20 minutes’ walk up the hill that serves meals.
