Description

Welcome to our family’s beloved “tiny home” in the country. Nestled in the woods on a private parcel of retired farmland, the cottage is newly renovated (2024) and is 480 square feet. Perfect for a solo adventurer or a couple looking to get away. Located 4 miles from historic downtown Salem, New York, we welcome everyone from scenic drivers, skiers, hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, leaf-peepers, business and wedding travelers, travel nurses, or anyone seeking a unique and tranquil rural escape. The space Guests will have exclusive access to the entire cottage and surrounding yard. The house has a bit of rustic charm, but offers all the modern amenities you’d expect for a short, comfortable stay or extended vacation including: keyless entry, high speed Wi-Fi, smart TV, A/C, wood burning stove, outdoor fire pit, propane barbecue grill, and more. AT&T has good cell service throughout the property. Verizon has ok service. There is no landline or cable TV. The TV does however allow you to login to your various streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc. The cottage offers a compact yet fully equipped kitchen with a full size refrigerator and a 4 burner cooktop stove and oven. There is no dishwasher. Basic cooking essentials, spice rack, and coffee are provided. Our well water is delicious, filtered, and great to drink right from the tap. With a single level and open “studio” floor plan, the bedroom, kitchen, and living room spaces are combined into one cohesive environment. The bedroom has an updated queen mattress, pillow topper, and extra pillows and blankets. We are happy to provide a comfortable twin blow up air mattress, extra pillows and linens should you prefer a second bed. Guest access To access the cottage you will need to drive ½ mile down a gravel (unpaved) road. The road is well maintained and well-traveled, but you may experience a few potholes, or mud and your vehicle may get a little dirty. Typical upstate NY roads here in Washington County! Our driveway is a stone driveway and the house is set back off the road about 100 feet. In the winter months, we recommend an all wheel drive vehicle. The rest of the year, any vehicle will do just fine! We have only one quiet neighbor roughly 100 yards away on the adjoining property, so the space offers a very private yard. There is ample parking for vehicles. We do not have an electric vehicle level 2 charger, but guests may use the 120 volt outlet on the front patio to trickle charge their EV if needed. The cottage is not ADA accessible. During the winter months, to supplement the electric baseboard heat guests are welcome to use the Cottage’s wood burning stove. Firewood and instructions are provided. The woodstove is available for guest use October 15th through the month of April. Year-round we have an outdoor fire pit and propane barbecue grill available for guest use. Propane and outdoor firewood are provided. Being a cottage in the forest, various wildlife might make an appearance in the yard! This includes deer, wild turkey, rabbits, squirrels, and at times although rare, some of the more unattractive species such as snakes or bats. If relaxing outside is your plan, be sure to bring insect repellant to ward off those pesky mosquitoes or ticks. During the fall, there are open hunting seasons throughout upstate New York. Although we don’t allow hunting on our property, surrounding farms may choose to do so. While not a regular occurrence, guests may at times hear gunfire in the distance. This is nothing to be alarmed about. Book your stay today and reconnect with nature! Other things to note No matter the season, the region surrounding our home is THE place to take a scenic drive. Journey through beautiful mountain and farm landscapes and take in the breathtaking views and memorable experiences. If you like to explore new scenic areas, while having a relaxing and private space nearby to retreat home, this place is for you! In the springtime, take advantage of the area’s robust amount of maple syrup farms. Whether it's March or April when the sap is flowing abundantly, or any time of the year, certain establishments provide maple syrup products, tours, tastings, breakfasts, and more. Mapleland Farms is our recommendation! The area also has a variety of trout streams and ponds available for public trout fishing. If you like history, there are a number of historic and cultural landmarks nearby providing information about the area’s heritage and notable figures, such as the legendary Saratoga Battlefield Historical Park and the local Shushan covered bridge. In the summertime, there is much to do! A number of local state parks offer hiking trails, you can go berry picking at local Stewart’s Farms, you can visit the Battenkill Creamery for a farm tour or to enjoy their delicious homemade ice cream, or head over to Vermont for some spectacular scenic mountain drives or working farm tours. We are about 50 minutes from the Saratoga racetrack which offers horseracing mid-July through the beginning of September. If you have a boat, nearby Cossayuna Lake offers some of the state’s best Tiger Muskellunge fishing or a fun place to cruise on your boat, kayak, canoe, or jetski. Hubbard Hall and the Fort Salem Theater present cultural offerings and performances throughout the summer and fall. Nearby Lauderdale Park on Lake Lauderdale in the town of Cambridge has a public beach for swimming. There is a great local book store close by called Owl Pen Books. Be sure to check out Salem Art Works right in town if you like visual and sculpture art. Music From Salem has performances throughout the summer too. And lastly, if you like to see live animals and unique handmade wool items be sure to visit “Quarry Ridge Alpacas.” In the fall, the foliage viewing around this area is outstanding. You don’t have to go far either, you can view a lot of it right from the Cottage's front window. Driving around the country in nearby Vermont or around the local farms, you can see some of the Northeast’s most vibrant colors. Fall is also a great time to go apple picking at nearby McWhorter’s or Hicks Orchards, go pumpkin picking, or explore some of the areas corn mazes and other fall festivities. In the winter, we are around one hour from two major Vermont ski resorts; Bromley and Stratton; with Bromley being the closest and most affordable. Even closer, there is local Willard Mountain which while smaller, offers some fun beginner terrain. Winter is also a great time to go snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing on Cossayuna Lake, or just relax by our cozy wood stove while the snow falls outside. In the winter, we recommend an all wheel drive vehicle.
