Description

Set in the village of Ponsworthy, directly on the Two Moors Way and within short driving distance of many of Dartmoor’s Tors, walks and beauty spots is Quinn Tor with its own beautiful hill and river front, mature oaks- and a rock formation we lovingly call our own little Tor. The Wheelhouse is set on Quinn Tor and has been lovingly converted into a unique and beautiful barn with tranquil, comfortable and modern interiors. It is a much loved home and we are now happy to welcome guests! The space The Wheelhouse is opposite The Bakehouse and has its own little patio with coffee table just outside the door. There are two steps to access the building. The Wheelhouse benefits from access to shared land, including a hill with views, a river bank, a rustic sitting area which catches a lot of sun and a bench and table by the river. The paths are very rustic and require sure footing. The Wheelhouse has a free flow interior with plenty of daylight. The living area is spacious and is uniquely set up with the old chimney of the former wheel forge now supporting a cosy sitting corner and a beautiful suspended wood burner. A comfortable chaise lounge sofa is perfect for relaxing, reading or enjoying some TV whilst having the cosy warmth of the wood burner. Multidirectional blinds let in light but provide complete privacy. The entrance houses a small but well equipped kitchenette. It may not lend itself to cooking up large feasts but is perfect for breakfasts, eggs, warming up ready meals, etc with a single hotplate, microwave, toaster, fridge/freezer and coffee/tea making facilities. Cutlery, crockery, glassware and basic cooking equipment are all provided. An oak shoe bench adds storage as well as extra sitting space. Coat hooks accommodate multiple jackets. A covered boot store outside the door keeps muddy boots and walking shoes dry. The cosy bedroom has a super-king sized ottoman bed with extra storage below and an extra comfortable memory foam mattress and soft bedlinen for a good nights sleep. The adjoining en-suite bathroom is divided into a room with a comfortable slipper bath and wardrobe and a separate bathroom with a shower and sink/toilet area. The bedroom and bathroom have doors and shutters to provide a comfortable dark sleeping space. A cot can happily be provided for very young children, please enquire, but generally the property is not really suitable for bigger families. Please ask us about the availability of the Bakehouse just opposite if you are more than 3. Dogs can currently not be accepted due to sheep on the land and a lack of dog drying facilities but again, please ask about the Bakehouse which may be available and can accommodate dogs during the sheep free, dryer summer months. Speaking of sheep, meet the 4 friendly resident woolies up by the hill between October and April, they may even come down to say Hi. We also want our guests to know that we are particularly grateful for your custom because we are donating all profits to the charities TOMMY’S and SANDS. Quinn Tor was named and restored in memory of our little boy Ivan Quinn and it gives us great comfort to contribute to those worthwhile causes in his name. Guest access Guests have access to all of the land at Quinn Tor which will be shared by The Bakehouse, our family home. More often than not however, guests will have the entire land to themselves. The sitting area by the Wheelhouse is exclusively for Wheelhouse guests. There is an off street parking space right in front of the gate. Please also note that the land on Quinn Tor is fairly wild with no formal paths (on purpose, we are actively re-wilding the plot) and the river, although mostly shallow, is not secured. Any use of the land is at your own risk. Other things to note Ponsworthy is idyllic and very quiet but it does not have a pub or shop. Whilst plenty of fantastic amenities are nearby, they are a short to medium drive away. Widecombe in the Moor, for example, is a mere 7-10 minute drive with a fab pub and amazing brunch/lunch cafe and various little shops. Holne which is a 8min drive, has a little community shop, bigger shops are in Ashburton (15min) and Tavistock. I will provide plenty of recommendations but please be aware of this fact before booking. Should you want be able to stroll to a pub, it might not be the right fit. We often stock up on food on our way in via Ashburton. Ponsworthy has no mobile phone reception! However, we do have fast Wifi so Wifi calls work perfectly. Ponsworthy is very rural, you will hear cockerels and chickens, ducks and cows and sheep, plenty of wild birds and mammals. Occasionally wild ponies or other free roaming farm animals will block the road. We find this charming every time it happens but please be aware that this might happen.
