Relax and enjoy the great views, watching wildlife and the horses or stargaze from the from the large front porch or the back deck. If you have not seen the night sky away from the city, you will be amazed. Then again you may just want to cozy up in front of the fire with a book. There is an Information and Safety Book covering the house, property and area provided. Kids can learn a lot but must be well supervised. The ranch and forest have a lot of stuff that really attract kids to play with, some of which can be dangerous, including livestock, wild animals, plants, fences, debris etc. You must tell kids to stay in yard, don’t climb on fences, leave stuff alone, and always keep close watch on your children. While the ranch and the forest is a wonderful place for supervised children to learn about ranches, forest, and nature, you can expect children not properly supervised to get hurt. We do not allow loud or rowdy parties and excessive noise, if we can hear you from our house, you will be instructed to leave. Prescheduled events with music. etc. are possible at extra cost, and may require renting portable toilets, but only if planned and approved before renting! We have Basic Satellite Direct TV, Satellite Internet and internet phone service. It is not as fast as town and data may be limited. But it has been fine for Zoom and online classes. It will slow down when multiple devices are on it. Warning, power, satellite services for IT and TV may go down at any time especially in stormy or windy weather, during power company systems maintenance, fire danger safety shutdowns. When it is snowing the dishes get covered blocking IT or TV reception and requires you to sweep them off to use IT or TV. Pets and horses allowed at extra cost with advance notice, but horses not really recommended December to April due to possible winter weather. Sequoia National Forest surrounds the area and is free access public land. The forest is open to exploring, hiking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and hunting & fishing (following regulations by CA. Fish and Wildlife with appropriate licenses). Motorcycles and E-bikes are only allowed on the designated OHV trails and roads on Sequoia National Forest. Vehicles must have licenses or off-road green stickers. Poso Ck. runs by the property, and it is great for exploring and for kids to wade in. You may enjoy the challenge, in season, of fishing for small hard to catch native trout. In our area we have unique and fun sights with incredible views. There are 2 historic Forest Service Lookout Towers, Tobias & Baker Pt. Other unique sites that take some exploring to find are Tobias Creek Indian Camp site with many very large grinding holes carved in the rocks and Deep Ck. Cave. Be advised travel in the winter is restricted and many forest roads are gated and closed to vehicle traffic in winter to protect the roads but open for snowmobiling, snow shoeing or cross country skiing if there is enough snow. Sequoia Forest information and maps can be found at their website or Offices in Porterville, Kernville and Springville. Giant Sequoias: there are young Sequoias on the property. The closest developed large giant Sequoia groves in the Forest is Trail of 100 Giants, about 45 minutes away. Others are Long Mdw. Grove, and Cunningham grove on Seqouia Forest are about 1 to 1.5 hour away except in winter when the Forest Service closes the roads. Larger and more developed Giant Sequoia groves are at Mt. Home State Park about 2 hours away and Seqouia National Park 1:45 hours away has the largest and year around accessible groves. Wildlife: There is lots of wildlife in the area many birds, squirrels, quail, deer, racoons, bobcats, raccoons and foxes . But we do occasionally see wildlife that can be dangerous such as Black Bears, Mt. Lions, Rattlesnakes, Wild Pigs and Coyotes. While these could be dangerous, here they are generally very reclusive and seldom seen. In our area wildlife does not see humans as often as more developed areas and most have not lost their inherent fear of man. Anywhere in forest of CA, they are dangerous for pets or small children. You should always be vigilant while hiking in the forests, pepper spray is a good deterrent for all predators. The most common wildlife issue is mosquitoes, yellow jackets and ticks. These very by season and year but expect them from spring to fall in warm weather. During these times wear DEET insect repellant on exposed skin, pant cuffs and collars while in the woods. In the evening on the porch Citronella candles and repellant for outside eating protection is a good idea. If you have an allergy to insects, be sure to bring your EpiPen. Hazardous plants; most common is stinging needles in moist areas, and poison oak at slightly lower elevations than the ranch. These can create an itching rash. More dangerous is nonedible mushrooms and other fungus if consumed, especially for kids. Fishing: Fish can be caught in Poso Ck., Peel Mill Ck. and Tobias Ck. from the last weekend in April to Nov.15. These are small stealthy natives; we use a light wt. fly or ultralight spinning rod with barbless hook, so we can through back the ones too small to eat. It’s fun, but do not count on a fish fry unless you travel and hour or so to some of the larger water ways or lakes such as the Kern River, Lake Isabella, noble Young Creek or Peppermint Creek. All 1 to 1.5 hour or so away. These have natives and planted trout. The Kern River also has a special regulation area for barbless fly fishing for the Kern River Rainbow; a fish related to the Golden Trout and only found in upper Kern River. Hunting: The National Forest land around the ranch is open for hunting. This area is Deer Hunting Zone D-8, there are also seasons for Gray Squirrels, Valley Quail, Mtn. Quail, and Bear. Hunting is difficult due to the amount of cover provided by the thick forest. Guests are not allowed to hunt on our ranch, but we do hunt year around on the ranch for pests and game in season. The area hosts rodeos and other events at the Greenhorn Mountain Veterans Assn. community rodeo grounds and hall. A PRCA rodeo Memorial Day and others occasionally such as Ranch Rodeos and Junior Rodeos each month during the summer. The GMVA also hosts other activities such as dinners and concerts through the year. Check their web site for activities. Winter sports: is sporadic. Snow in the southern Sierra is not dependable and melts fast between storms. Locally when there is snow you can X/Country skiing, snowshoe, snowmobile and sledding. Closest Downhill skiing is at Shirley Meadows, 40 miles away. But again, it is open sporadically. The closest Ski Area that is open most of the winter is China Peak. Always check for conditions as they change rapidly there. Alta Sierra Ski & Snow Play area web site. Climate: We get all 4 beautiful seasons but no extremes. Temperatures: lows at night in winter are often down into the 20's, but on occasion in December and January temps go down to 10 degrees F. Summers and fall nights are cool and usually in the 40’s to 60's. Daytime temperatures in winter are usually 30's - 60's with 70-80's in summer with an occasional 90s. In summer thunderstorms with rain and lightning happen occasionally but can develop quickly so come prepared year around for cool wet weather. As with all the forests of the California, the area has very high wildfire danger in the summer so extreme caution must be used with any activity that could produce heat or sparks. Do not park or drive a vehicle wear exhaust pipes could contact dry grass. Firework of any kind are illegal to possess or use in the area. Any time you are in the forests always pay attention to any reported fire activity and follow any directives for fire safety. Weather forecast: Always check the National Weather Service Weather their site is weather dot gov. Winter: Snow in the Southern Sierra Nevada Mountains where we are does not happen as frequently as it does in northern Sierras. We are almost 5000 foot in elevation. We may get snows anytime from Oct-May. While very infrequent, we have had snow on Memorial Day more than once. Some years during the winter we only get a few storms of 6 inches while others may drop 2+ feet in a day. Average years snows occur off and on Nov-April with average snow fall of 6" to 1'. Our record snow was 4 feet in 2022. Always carry chains from Oct-May. The county only plows the county roads once a day and it takes them until about noon or latter to get here. The driveway to the house goes down a hill and it requires chains or 4x if snow covered. Snow requires 2x vehicles to park on hill above the house, due to the steep slope, and 4X often needs chains. Snows of a foot require 4X to chain up, more requires parking on the hill above house. You also may have to wait for the snowplow to plow the county road before leaving the area. Forest roads are not plowed and usually gated in winter. Spring: The spring generally starts in April and usually continues into June. The green up with wildflowers are especially beautiful on the drive up, in the area and on the property. Expect most forest roads and access to Groves to be closed until Memorial Day and possibly some into June. You may still have wet and muddy conditions on roads and trails on the ranch and surrounding area. Use extra caution around all waters, Creeks and the Kern River will be running high, cold and may be murky. Pat was raised here, and Pat and Carrie have lived in their house on the ranch for over 30 years. Both Pat and Carrie started our careers as firefighters with the Forest Service and retired from Kern County Fire Department. Carrie also is the Coldwell Banker realtor for the area. If you have any questions about the area, we can help you. Guest access Alert!
