Description
Clinton House - a beautiful Gothic Revival house designed by architect Benjamin Bucknall - tucked away down a lane next to the local church. This unusual family home sits in its own secret setting, within 15 mins walk of the vibrant market town of Stroud. The Balcony Room is one of two en-suite bedrooms available. This room is spacious and beautifully appointed, arranged either with super-king or twin beds, with a stylish en-suite bath/shower room and dual aspect views to the local Commons. The space Clinton House is a 5 bedroom cotswold stone built property with 3 ensuite bathrooms and 1 shared shower room, lived in by the hosts and 2 of their 3 children. There are 2 rooms available for guests - The Balcony Room which can be set as a twin or super-king room, and The Beamed Room with double bed. Both rooms are on the first floor up the oak staircase, have en-suite facilities, and both rooms have locks. The house started life as a cottage built in the early C19th (the kitchen and bedroom above, and inner porch doorway are the remains of the old cottage). Clinton House was home to the family of local architect Benjamin Bucknall (1833-1895) and he designed its 3 storey extension in the 1850s. His unfinished masterpiece Grade I Woodchester Mansion is a 20 min drive away. Two of his brothers built Rodborough Court which sits in the grounds below Clinton House. The previous owners of Clinton House undertook substantial structural works to save this then neglected and condemned building, and the current owners have been sympathetically renovating the property and its garden for the last 23 years! The renovation has stayed true to the house’s heritage, and blends contemporary eclectic furnishings with the original features. The house is located in the heart of the Stroud valleys, 15 mins walk from the vibrant market town of Stroud with its railway connections to London, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Bristol, making this is a perfect place to stay for anyone visiting the area for work or leisure. Stroud is also home to one of the country’s award-winning Farmer’s Markets (Saturdays 8am-2pm), the Stroudwater Canal, Stroud Brewery and Ecotricity. Clinton House, in the popular suburb of Rodborough, has easy access to the Cotswold Way and many Cotswold AONBs, including the beautiful limestone grasslands of Rodborough, Selsley and Minchinhampton Commons. Laurie Lee’s home village of Slad ('Cider With Rosie') is a short drive away and also nearby are the charming towns of Nailsworth and Cirencester. Westonbirt Arboretum and Highgrove, Bath, Cheltenham Races, Cotswold Water Park, Badminton and the Gatcombe horse trials are just some of the other attractions nearby. Guest access Clinton House is accessed from the parking area by 8 stone steps. The entrance door is in the red stair tower. The two available bedrooms are on the first floor up 13 steps. There is one step up into The Balcony Room and one step down into the en-suite bath/shower room (the shower is over the bath). There is a small step down onto the balcony deck. There is level access to our other available room, The Beamed Room, from the first floor landing, and level access into the en-suite shower room with walk-in shower.
