Description

Enjoy a beautifully designed retreat in this former Candy Shop in the heart of Pgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood. The open floor plan includes two floors with a bed on each floor (think 'loft' instead of closed rooms with doors). The kitchen opens to a Tolkienesque garden patio to be at peace. Lawrenceville's restaurants, shops, theaters, and cafes are just a minute's walk from your front door. Rest, relax, sleep in, cook, eat in, and recharge in an environmentally conscious cozy home (new HVAC). The space When we walked through the front door of this little brick building from 1917 we were immediately transported back in time, even though there was a lot of work to be done. We learned from neighbors who had grown up in Lawrenceville, that it once was a family-run general store/candy store for much of this steel town neighborhood. We started renovating immediately, spending many months demoing, learning how the building was built, meticulously restoring what we could, and implementing practices and products that helped protect or had the least negative impact on the planet. The next step was how to design our little brick home. A Hobbit House, of course! Ok, so it’s not built into the ground, it’s not equipped with the iconic round front entry, and Gandalf has not visited, as of yet. But, it was our inspiration! Soon we started referring to it as The Hobbit House. ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT Our goal was to create a space that would feel like a warm hug when you walked through the front door with its American Clay plastered walls, comfy OKO-Tek/organic mattresses and linens, radiant heat bathroom floors, recycled Pennsylvania barn wood floors, non-toxic building products, fully stocked kitchen, stainless steel high-quality pots and pans, organic teas, fair trade coffee, recycling, mini split eco-friendly climate control, creations from local artisans, and a native plant romantic garden escape. It was important to us that the complete process from building products down to cleaning products stood with our commitment to environmental building/rehab practices. This way our guests could be assured that their home away from home was not only comfortable but truly healthy. The Hobbit House idea slowly grew and changed into a design with a mind for slowing down and restoring. Our lives are so busy today that we are hoping to give our guests a moment to breathe. After you’ve had a chance to rest you can walk out the front door and be just one block from a cultural city center hub of Pittsburgh. There are a variety of restaurants, an independent movie house, a spin studio, a climbing gym, bike rentals, a Zipcar station, unique clothing stores, comedy events, and plenty of delicious coffee houses - all within a few minutes walk. We are close by so if you need anything we're available within our contact hours. We do offer services for an extra cost, which we hope will help you relax and refresh or to celebrate a special event: Concierge grocery service, flowers, and extra cleaning services. Traveling nurses, professors, and other professionals - if you're interested in staying longer please inquire with us! A stay here is, in a (Danish) word, hygge [hoo-gah]. Guest access The whole space is yours to enjoy and unwind. The fenced backyard is your private space but not beyond the corner gate. It will be obvious once you're there. Other things to note Our home is located one block from the main street filled with charm and culture. Parking in our area is city permit parking only for residents and their guests with permits from 8-6 pm. We will provide you with a permit to make parking more convenient. Since you're one block away from 25 blocks of entertainment, shops, and restaurants in one of Pittsburgh’s most popular historic neighborhoods the evenings can get busy, but daytime parking routinely offers many options, so parking before 5:30/6 will make it easier. Just a note to all our country hobbits. Two distinctly different sleeping experiences to cater to different guests: Lower level cozy bedroom with a king size bed with a 3” topper, Smart TV, & half bath. Main/Upper level comfortable twin daybed, Smart TV, & full bath. Fresh Air Exchange Unit to keep a continual movement of air. keeping our home's indoor air quality as healthy as possible. No radiation UV cleaning units inside mini-splits to help maintain a healthy living environment by reducing indoor airborne pollutants. Fragrance free - We just ask that you refrain from using fabric softeners & apply your perfumes/cologne outside to help keep our stay as allergen-free as possible. Much appreciated!:D Non-Smoking both inside and outside Cleaning Protocols Commitment to a consistent, meticulous, and non-chemical cleaning protocol before every visit through the use of steaming, high heat washing, no radiation UV lights, pillow and mattress protectors washed between every guest. Filtered Water System All you have to do is bring your bottle.
