Artists' House with sea views
Artists' House with sea views
Description
A charming, south facing house in a quiet lane with sea views and stunning sun sets. Ideal for dog walkers, creatives and nature lovers. The shops, cafes, pubs of St Just are only 10 mins by foot. A 20 min walk to the SW Coast path takes you to Porth Nanven Beach, (Guardian pick) or Cape Cornwall. Snug sitting room with a comfy couch, and wood burner. Easy parking. There are Studios discreet to the house, occupied by hosts. Unsuitable for people with mobility issues and small children. The space 5 Murray Villas / Carrallack Terrace was built in the 1930s to house local maritime radio operators, it’s an unfussy medium sized house set in a pleasant, sunny and verdant garden on the seaward edge of St Just. It’s a homely house, tastefully decorated with everything needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay in this exquisite part of Cornwall. Downstairs there’s a practical and well-equipped kitchen, (no coffee machine or microwave), a sunny dining room, utility room with downstairs toilet and a super-cosy sitting room with a wood burner and TV, (we’ll leave enough logs for a night or two). Upstairs there’s a toilet, modest sized bathroom with rain shower, two double bedrooms, and one single. Lying in bed in the master bedroom it’s easy to see Longships Lighthouse off Land’s End and on a clear day even the Isles of Scilly float serenely on the horizon, making for long lazy lie-ins watching ships go by. To the front of the house there’s a small and sunny south facing garden with a table and chairs, perfect for watching the sunset. This isn’t a show home by any means, don’t expect chintzy curtains and matching bedside tables, it’s a relaxing place to kick back with friends after a day of adventures, exploring the many delights of this stunning part of Cornwall. As the upstairs windows are not child proof the house is more suited to adult groups of up to five, rather than young families. The stairs are not carpeted so please use the bannister. The slopes to the garden are steep so access via the steps opposite the back door. Location: Nestled amongst the dramatic landscape of West Penwith, the town of St Just is a UNESCO world heritage site. Recently featured in the BBC drama Poldark, the landscape is extraordinary and breathtaking. The vast and beautiful beach of Sennen Cove is five miles away, with other more secluded and sheltered beaches nearby, like Porth Nanven (locally known as Cot, home to a nesting family of Kestrels, with the beautiful Brisons rocks glistening just offshore), Boat Cove, Portheras and Nanjizal, which is the starting point for the ancient St Michael and St Mary ley line. Seals are sighted often, sometimes basking sharks too, butterflies are here in abundance, and birders can seek out the local Cornish Choughs as well as many migratory birds making their first landfall after flying north from Africa. The lush tangy taste and smell of the sea air is everywhere here, sometimes in the less welcome form of frequent high winds, we’re on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean after all - it feels healthy, vibrant, energising and mystical all at once. Standing stones, and Bronze Age burial mounds are dotted about, telling the tale of West Cornwall’s ancient past. The beautiful archipelago of the Isles of Scilly can be visited for the day from Penzance or nearby Land’s End Airport (the small Twin Otter aircraft used to fly visitors to Scilly are often seen and heard flying around) - this small group of islands is reminiscent of the West Coast of Scotland, or even some might say, the Caribbean. Surfing is hugely popular in West Cornwall, as are sea kayaking, sailing, diving and wild swimming, there’s a naturist beach not too far away if that’s your thing, and of course for culture lovers, the stunning clifftop Minack Theatre , Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens and The Tate St Ives. The weather can be changeable to put it mildly, moving from blazing sunshine to rolling mist rapidly and sometimes unexpectedly - come prepared with waterproofs and warm clothes to complement your sunglasses at any time of year (the wood burner sometimes gets fired up even in July!) When the weather’s bad there’s the rich history of the ancient local mines to explore, numerous local pubs (four in St Just alone), and the galleries, shops and attractions of St Ives and Penzance are both reachable by car or a regular bus service. St Just is a friendly and vibrant town - there are quirky artisan cafes, two butchers (amazing pasties in McFadden’s), a deli, Coop, greengrocers, as well as a farm shop in nearby Bosavern. Fish as fresh as it gets is available in nearby Newlyn. The South West coast path is a stone’s throw away, as are countless other tracks and trails like the ancient Tinners’ Way, and for cyclists, the West Kernow Way. It truly is an endlessly fun, fascinating and stunning area to visit and explore. Guest access Guests have sole use of the front gate and garden. There is room for a maximum of two cars. Please bear the neighbours in mind when parking, as they tend to park opposite their properties when possible. Other things to note If you are bringing a dog/s, please clean up after them and bring appropriate bedding and blankets to protect the furniture, thank you.
