A Little Piece of History The Old Smithy has a fascinating past, with parts of the cottage dating back to 1598. Over the centuries, the property has evolved while retaining many of its original features, including exposed timbers, unusual architectural details and its impressive inglenook fireplace. One particularly special feature can be found in the converted attic, where original timbers from an extension completed in 1777 remain visible. Look closely and you may even spot the date carved into the wood. It’s these wonderful reminders of the cottage’s past, along with its delightfully quirky layout, that give The Old Smithy its distinctive personality. Good to Know As you’d expect from a home with more than 400 years of history, The Old Smithy has a few quirks worth knowing about before your stay. Some areas have low ceilings, and the cottage features steep, narrow staircases. The bathroom and toilet are located on the first floor. For these reasons, the property may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility. We love the cottage’s historic character, but it’s important to us that every guest knows what to expect and feels comfortable throughout their stay. Guest access Guests have exclusive use of the entire cottage and its private enclosed garden throughout their stay, making The Old Smithy a comfortable home from home.
