Johnstone-Rutherford Cottage

Halfway between Newberry College and the Newberry Opera house, the Johnstone-Rutherford Cottage places you within a 10 minute walk or less of either the main college campus or the opera house. The cottage is part of the Johnstone-Rutherford House complex built by the renowned builder Cam Davis, known for his historic homes here in Newberry and his work at the Biltmore Mansion in Asheville, NC. The cottage has been updated providing historic old world charm with a touch of modern convenience. The space The cottage is believed to have been a housekeepers dwelling back in the day. So it was simple in layout and function. 4 rooms. Enjoy a large bedroom with a king size bed and a spacious living room for relaxing between activities in historic Newberry and Newberry College. You will be centrally located in the vibrant Newberry old town and college campus. The cottage also provides a full kitchen and washer/dryer for your convenience. Tv and internet are provided in both main rooms. The kitchen has a full array of cooking elements for your use. Both rooms in the cottage have individual air conditioning and heating (not window units, but wall units close to the ceiling, European ductless style or split system as they are often called). Additionally, each room has a natural gas wall unit should you need extra heat for those rare South Carolina freezes. Set these to suit your comfort level. There is an electric blanket (winter only) for the king size bed should you choose to use it. We also keep an electric heater in the bathroom for extra heat during the winter. Hiding under the carpet were old wood floors as you would expect. We love them. And under the ceiling tile, old wood ceilings. Just a reminder that the cottage is ‘vintage’ (very old, LOL) and has seen many years of wear and tear over the decades. So please don’t arrive expecting an up to date modern experience. The charm of the cottage is its old world experience. Please be aware that the ‘crib’ is actually a pack-n-play and is typically available and in the bedroom closet. However, if you need it please make us aware so that we can make sure the unit is in the cottage. Guest access Guest have the entire cottage to themselves. The cottage is surrounded by a white picket fence and sits directly across from the Newberry College Teaching/Education facility on Kibler St. Guests with well trained dogs can provide access for their dog to the ground area within the white picket fence. However, if you allow your pet outside please be sure to clean up after your pet within the fenced in area. Best to park on Kibler right in front of the kitchen gate and door. Simply follow the cobblestone walkway a few feet toward the kitchen door. The door code is 9708. Enter the code and turn the dead bolt. Other things to note Don and Laura live in the Johnstone-Rutherford home adjacent to the cottage. This home is being restored to its original beauty. It will soon be a painted lady! Perhaps the first full painted lady in Newberry. The interior of the home is just about completed. The meticulous painting required for the exterior will continue for the foreseeable future. Thus it is not unusual to see ladders and scaffolding used by the painters to access the intricate trim around the home. Tours are sometimes available if the Minters, who live in the main house, are home.
