This area of Maine is perfect for hiking, biking, walking (our town has great sidewalks) and just simply enjoying the Nature of Maine! This home is located right in the heart of the Schoodic Peninsula! The Schoodic Peninsula is part of Acadia National Park. It covers an area of approximately 3,200 acres. The peninsula features rugged coastlines, scenic views, and a variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. It's less visited than the main portion of Acadia, offering a more tranquil experience for visitors. The region is known for its granite outcroppings, forests, and coastal ecosystems. It is a must see for any Maine vacation! Within the complex, there are brick paths and a picnic table in a gazebo. Only a one minute drive to kayak and bike rentals. This is a quiet, family oriented neighborhood right in town! More importantly - The community itself is safe and welcoming, known for its friendly neighbors and townspeople. A place where you can strike up a conversation at the local stores!!Nearby, you'll find lovely parks, walking trails, and quaint shops, making it an ideal spot for you if you’re looking to explore the beauty of Maine while enjoying a homey atmosphere! Other things to note About our town…. Winter Harbor is a small Downeast lobster 🦞 fishing community and is located directly across the bay from Bar Harbor! All of us locals call the Schoodic Peninsula our quiet side of Acadia National Park, the one less traveled! The Schoodic Park is only a short distance down the road from us on Main Street. This is the only portion of Acadia National Park that is on the mainland of Maine. At the beginning of the Schoodic Loop Road you’ll come across on the right, Frazer’s Point. There you will find picnic tables, many of which have fire rings and public restrooms. There is also a long pier and float for fishing! The views from the oceanside loop around the park are absolutely breathtaking! On the drive around the Schoodic Loop you’ll get to see Mark Island Lighthouse! There are also hiking and biking trails all around on the Schoodic Loop Road. So if you like to walk, hike, or bike, you’ll love all that this area has to offer. Schoodic Head is the highest point on the peninsula and it offers panoramic views east, west, north and south. At the southern most tip of the park is Schoodic Point! This is a great place to stop and watch the waves crash!! A very attractive section of the town is called Grindstone Neck. It’s a summer community of summer homes! Its western shore provides spectacular views of Bar Harbor and several of the mountains on Mount Desert Island. The southern part, called Grindstone Point, has views of Mark Island Lighthouse, Ned Island, Turtle Island, and Schoodic Peninsula. Also not too far from us, located on Sargent Street, is a wonderful Ferry Service that goes to Bar Harbor! Traveling on this hour long Ferry ride gives you the option to walk around in Bar Harbor without having to worry about the long and slow lines of traffic going onto and off from the island. It also means not having to scurry around in Bar Harbor to look for a parking spot! We personally like to go over on the early ride, walk around and explore the sights, shop, and have lunch! The “Bar” of Bar Harbor….. At low tide, the namesake of Bar Harbor, a sandbar, reveals itself and is used by hikers who wish to explore Bar Island which is part of Acadia National Park, northwest of the Town pier. The gravel and sandy surface remains somewhat wet at low tide for those who wish to discover the rocks, dig in the sand, find shells, seaweed and other organisms that live on the bar through its twice a day tidal flow of up to 12 feet. This natural land bridge is accessible as much as 2 hours before low tide and 2 hours after low tide. Access to the bar is through Bridge Street! But please research the tides and the area in general before planning this fun adventure. Especially check the times for the ferry and make sure you can get back to it in time to come back to Winter Harbor!
