Nestled on 100 acres of bushland, our self-contained studio is a fabulous retreat away from the City. Spacious and private, the studio comfortably sleeps 5 (queen bed, double futon, king single), with kitchenette, outdoor deck area, sun room, resort-style shower. The space Our property Kawalang is nestled on 100 acres of stunning bushland on Wonnarua Country, in the midst of the Watagan Forest of the Lower Hunter Valley, 1.5 hours from Sydney and Newcastle and 45 minutes from Gosford and trains north and south. The Yengo Look-out and Rock Platform with amazing Indigenous art, wineries and horse farms, historic Wollombi and Laguna Village are all nearby. We grow organically citrus and other fruits, vegetables and greens and do what we can to live sustainably. We keep waste to a minimum, composting our food scraps and reducing plastic as much as possible. Most of our energy is generated from our solar panels, with rainwater collected in filtered tanks providing our water supply. We live in harmony with the wildlife, including wombats, wallabies, possums, bandicoots, kookaburras, cockatoos and so much more. On walks down to the bottom field, you'll pass stunning cliff and rock formations, with a private valley and meandering creek for you to explore and enjoy. We are about 1 hour from an exquisite lookout toward Big Yengo, a sacred mountain as important to Aboriginal people in this area as Uluru is to Aboriginal communities in Central Australia; Aboriginal communities have gathered on the mountain over thousands of years. There are rock carvings, walking tracks and camp sites to be explored. The name Kawalang was gifted to us by Aniwan Gamilaroi Wonnarua Elder Uncle Bill Smith; it means 'abundance' in language. Guest access The Studio, deck with sofa and hammock, sunroom and outdoor spaces are for your enjoyment and relaxation! Wander among the gardens where we grow food organically. We are happy to give you a tour; there may be some goodies to pick and enjoy, depending upon the season! Take a walk down to the bottom field in the valley, down a steep private road and back up through the bush. Explore the many wombat homes on the valley floor or nestled along the meandering creek bank, listen to the bird life, a possum or wallaby moving about, and breathe in the magnificent trees and bush. You don't have to go anywhere for a delicious meal. We are happy to cook for you with food grown organically in our garden. There is a kitchenette fit-out with everything you need. Cook or be lazy and let us cook for you. A fire pit is available for use. Let us know if you'd like use to get it going for you. Other things to note You are able to charge your electric car at Kawalang. As there are no restaurants in the area, we are happy to prepare meals for you with fresh produce grown organically at Kawalang. Meals include (as seasonally available) fresh greens, citrus and other fruit, Kawalang marmalades, chutneys, pickled cucumber, pickled beans, Indian Lime Pickle, garlic, black garlic, finger limes, salted or dried citrus, quince paste, herbs and spices, which are also available for purchase. We have a large collection of books and games for adults and children. Visit the Yengo Lookout and Rock Platform less than an hour away, historic Wollombi, Laguna Village...or just kick back and enjoy being at Kawalang...it's easy to just be here and feel the land.
