Other things to note Lot-et-Garonne Hikes Lot-et-Garonne is a department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It owes its name to the two eponymous rivers that cross it. It is bordered to the west by the departments of Lot and Tarn-et-Garonne, to the south by Gers, to the west by Landes and Gironde and to the north by Dordogne. Before the French Revolution, the territory also included the cantons of Montaigu-de-Quercy, Auvillar, Valence d'Agen and Bourg-de-Visa. It is possible to divide the department into several areas. The latter is mainly occupied by plateaus with limestone hillsides. They are mainly found between the Garonne and Lot rivers. Corn is grown there and poplar cultivation is practiced. Hills, also limestone, occupy the northernmost part. The landscape is dominated by cereal fields and meadows. It is in this region that the area called "Pays au Bois" is located, following the important presence of a forest part. Hikes are possible in this region, such as that of Château Cadrès from Saint-Aignan or the Hautefage-la-Tour Loop by the Saint-Thomas and Saint-Just churches. To the west and south of the city of Agen are the hills of Néracais, with the presence of a more hilly landscape and the presence of cereals and vineyards. Walking there during the day is quite feasible with circuits such as the one called "The hill of Mazères and the valley of the Gers from Astaffort" or "On the hillsides around Brimont". The Southwest is occupied by moorland, or Gascony sand with pine trees. There are walks, including that of Casteljaloux to Lake Clarens. The forest offers various trails accessible by mountain bike and which allow you to make loops, including the one entitled "Dans les bois de Beauziac et Saint-Martin-Curton". Lot-et-Garonne Landscape Various cycling routes are present in the department and allow this practice on developed routes such as the Canal des 2 Mers, the Lot Valley, the Scandibérique as well as the cycle routes of the Baïse Valley and the Dropt. Equestrian routes, practicable over several days, traverse the department. First of all, there is the Dropt, but also the Pays de Serres, Henri IV in Albret and the Haut-Agenais. Since ancient times, the territory has been occupied by the Nitiobroges, a Gallic people, whose capital was already Agen. During the first centuries of our era, the region was in the hands of Aquitaine, which was a Roman province created by Augustus in 27 BC. In the years that followed, the region, because of its position between Gascony and Languedoc, would experience the influence coming from both sides. The area will even be under English occupation, which will be interspersed with brief French occupations. In 1317, with the creation of the diocese of Condom, the diocese of Agen was cut in half. Some territories will remain oriented towards Toulouse and others towards Bordeaux. The department is located in an oceanic zone: winters are mild, with an average temperature of 5°C, as well as summers, which are around 21°C.
