The solar power system is limited but provides for the essentials. - Safety First: No braais or outdoor fires are permitted due to the high risk to the endangered vegetation. Guest access Downstream and Upstream Cottage share an entrance gate, however, each cottage is set privately in the fynbos with sweeping mountain views and easy access to the river, ideal for nature-loving couples and those just needing to escape for some peace and quiet in the mountains. Yet the cottages are near enough to walk to each other should you wish to rent out both. In this way, The River Retreat Kogelberg is also well-suited to hiking groups or two families of four people, accommodating a maximum of eight people. Other things to note The River Retreat Kogelberg is conveniently located 90 mins from Cape Town and 5km from Kleinmond. Access is via 1,5km of gravel road from the Kogelberg Nature Reserve entrance gate on the R44 coastal road. There are numerous hikes and mountain biking trails to be explored in the surrounding nature reserves and national botanical gardens. Kogelberg Nature Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a botanical treasure trove with approximately 1800 plant species of which 150 are endemic or noteworthy. The Palmiet River has beautiful pools to swim in during our dry season (Summer) and is fun to kayak down in our wet season (Winter). The weather in the mountains can be wild and unpredictable. Please come prepared with suitable clothing and ready to embrace the elements.
