The municipality of Petruro Irpino is located in the Sabato Valley area. It is a village of 289 inhabitants, located 500 meters above sea level, 21 km from Avellino and 13 km from Benevento. The smallest town in the province of Avellino, with a panoramic position on a rocky spur in the middle valley of the Sabato River, a hinge between Irpinia and Sannio, on whose hills the rows of the ancient Greco di Tufo DOCG chase each other. The territory covers 3.14 km² and the neighboring municipalities are: Altavilla Irpina, Chianche, San Nicola Manfredi, Torrioni and Tufo. The etymology of the name seems to come from the Latin petra, meaning "crag", or from petrurium, meaning "stone", "rock".
