Officially recognized as America’s native spirit by Congress in 1964, bourbon earned its name from Bourbon County, Kentucky, where early production thrived, though its origins are tied more broadly to the state’s limestone-rich water and ideal climate for aging. By the 19th century, Kentucky’s distilling tradition grew into a cornerstone of its economy and culture, with iconic distilleries emerging and cementing the state’s reputation as the heart of bourbon production, a legacy that endures today along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
