The Reserve is a great place to learn more about ocean life. It has a ranger station and park area, two beaches, wonderful tide pools (check the tide charts), and beautiful trails through an historic cypress tree grove. The reserve is home to many harbor seals that may be sunning themselves for you to see. (NOTE** The mother seals are pupping and then raising their young here, so areas at Moss Beach may be blocked or coned off for the seals’ privacy at various times throughout the year.) The trail through the cypress trees overlooks the ocean and is great for seal watching. It leads you to spacious Seal Cove Beach with sandy shores and tide pools for exploring. **The winter storms (Jan. 2026) have been rough on the closest beach ramp. Access is limited right now, but there's a great view there and all the trails and Seal Cove Beach/tide pools are wide open. -Bluff Trails Walk down to Weinke Way and follow the trails along the bluffs overlooking Moss Beach. There are benches along this trail to sit and overlook the ocean. Some small, steep trails lead down to more little beach areas. -Pillar Point Bluff Park and Trails For a longer walk with amazing ocean views, walk through the Fitzgerald Reserve trails to Beach Way and out to Pillar Point Bluff Park and Trails. This takes you all the way to Mavericks Beach (of the famed surfing competition). This also makes for a good bike ride. -Drive 2 miles north to Montara State Beach. -Drive 3 miles south to Surfer's Beach. -Drive 1 hour south along the coast to Santa Cruz -Check out our Welcome Book for a list of dozens of other beaches in the area to explore. And of course the winter months are our rainy season with an occasional gusty storm! Check your weather app, but know that a few miles one direction or another may bring very different weather. ✈️🚁NOISE- Please note** Not far from Moss Beach is Half Moon Bay Airport- open to private pilots and the Coast Guard. On some bright days you'll hear and see Coast Guard planes and helicopters practicing and patrolling. Private planes of all kinds (some rather loud) will take off or will be doing their "touch and go" training from time to time. FYI-Sometimes the noise can be annoying if you're not a plane lover. : ) Good news- that's when we go to the beach. $$TAXES- Our nightly pricing INCLUDES a 10% Occupancy Tax that we submit for our guests to San Mateo County.
