Description

Well appointed 1BR historic cabin on the river with screened-in porch, resort-style, spring-fed pool, and NEW private spring-water hot tub. Our deep canyon offers a cool resting place during hot summers with its shady breezes & endlessly flowing stream. Let the sound of the river, birds, & the frogs lull you to sleep in this tranquil oasis. Recently updated with new fixtures & modern amenities. Other great features include our lush grounds and proximity to great hikes & waterholes. The space Ojala is a quiet, peaceful place in nature. The Cabin is situated on a private, gated road on 25 acres surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest and avocado/citrus orchards. This is the last remaining cabin of the historic Ojala resort. Feels like you’re in the middle of a forest, with no other houses in sight, but only few minute drive to Meiners Oaks and downtown Ojai. NEW - Hot Tub Just added in January 2026. Private, filled with our spring water and just a few steps off the screened-in porch of the Cabin. Exclusively for use by guests of the Redwood Cabin. Bedroom The Cabin's bedroom boasts a queen-size bed that feels like sinking into a cloud. Equipped with plush pillows and the soothing sounds of nature, it promises a restful night’s sleep. The central air/heat is newly installed and whisper-quiet. Bathroom The bathroom features a walk-in stall shower, toilet and vanity and we provide soft towels and luxury toiletries. Kitchen The kitchen comes fully equipped with an adorable retro-look fridge/freezer, oven/stove, toaster, kettle, and coffee station, including a French press and coffee grinder, along with all the necessary pots, pans, plates, bowls, glasses, cups, and silverware. We love to cook, so avid homecooks will appreciate some equipment beyond your basic cookware, plus you'll see some of our cookbook collection prominently displayed - please enjoy browsing and using the recipes! If you prefer to eat out, we have a complete list of our favorite spots in our guidebook in the cabin. The kitchen is stocked with cooking essentials such as salt, pepper, and cooking oil, and when available, you'll also receive a complimentary sampling of our seasonal produce. Living Space The open concept main room includes a built-in countertop bar with stools connecting the kitchen to the living room. The leather couch is perfect for gazing out the large windows to the river and mountains. We stock a variety of board games for you to enjoy during your stay, but also have a TV linked with our Netflix account, and you are welcome to log into your apps as well. For our music lovers, we have a Bluetooth Marshall speaker to enhance your retreat. We also have LED candles with a remote/timers so you can safely enjoy a candlelit cabin experience! In the winter months, there is central heating, and the option for a fire in the wood-burning stove, which we can have loaded with firewood, ready for you to light when you arrive. In the summer, stay cool with the dedicated, whisper-quiet AC. Screened-in Porch Enjoy the beautiful, peaceful sounds of the river at the table set for two, but without the bugs! We love our screened-in porches up here and the Cabin's is spacious enjoy to enjoy a meal. Pool Our pool is huge and resort-style, and the pool deck features cushioned chaise lounges, a couch set with club chairs, plus multiple sets of tables and chairs, with ample space to sunbathe. The pool is not heated and is spring fed. We have a solar powered skimmer that you will notice running in the pool. We have pool towels for you, which you can find rolled in the bedroom closet - please use these at the pool instead of the bathroom towels. The pool is a shared space with us (we live here) and another long term tenant. History Ojala was once a Chumash gathering place, and is located at the confluence of North Fork Matilija Creek and Matilija Creek, where they become the Ventura River. The Chumash believed the area was a power spirit. In more recent times, it has been a resort and even a training camp for the boxer Jack Dempsey. Our family has been owners/stewards since 1978. You would be staying in the last remaining cabin, a true piece of Ojai Valley history. Some of the remaining historic structures include the huge 1940's pool shaded by oaks and redwoods, a 300 foot long suspension bridge that hangs over the river, and stacked stone walls. Around Ojala The river is a babbling brook in the summer. However, after heavy rainfall, it can become a raging torrent. We share the canyon with many wild animals, including, but not limited to: mice, squirrels, skunks, bobcats, raccoons, mountain lions, and bears. You might see some, or hear them running around, even on the roof. Don’t be alarmed, just make noise if you walk off the paths. Do watch out for rattlesnakes, ticks, and poison oak (there is Tecnu in the bathroom cabinet should you encounter poison oak). Walk where the gravel or path is clear. The tap water is from our own spring located up the mountain in the national forest. It comes to us by gravity flow through a collection of spring boxes, storage tanks, and a lot of pipes. It is pure mountain spring water from an aquifer unspoiled by any agricultural or industrial runoff, certified by the state of CA as drinking water. It is filtered but has no chlorine or chemicals added. Please conserve it and enjoy it - it is some of the highest quality drinking water you will find. There is no cell service at Ojala, but with a few simple steps in your smartphone, you can easily receive phone calls and send texts once you are on the Wifi here. We provide some helpful instructions on how to do this in our on-site guidebook. Ojala is a quiet, low-use retreat, plus the full-time home for us and a few long term tenants. Please respect the surrounding area by keeping music and other sources of noise to low levels. Animals Sorry, we do not allow guests to bring pets. We have a coop with ducks and chickens; please be mindful of the electric fence on the coop that is always on to keep our birds safe from prey. Guest access - Once your stay is confirmed, we will provide the gate code information. - Parking for one vehicle is located at the bottom of the stairs; follow signage. Please do not park in driveways or back into spaces. Do not attempt to drive up to the front door of the cabin, as there is nowhere to turn around. - Please respect the privacy of all other dwellings at Ojala and refrain from walking on the paths around these homes. - When available, we leave a sampling of our organically farmed produce and honey in the Cabin for you to enjoy, but please do not pick the fruit and vegetables you may see while exploring Ojala. If you’d like more during your stay, or to take home with you, we would be happy to sell our produce, eggs, and honey. - Please be mindful that we do have neighbors and we respect their privacy by staying off of their property. Other things to note The Cabin is best suited for guests over the age of 21 who are capable of climbing a flight of stairs from the parking area. The Cabin's hot tub is private - no one else can access. The grounds and the pool are shared spaces with us and a few other long term tenants. We provide a list of our favorite activities in Ojai in our guidebook in the cabin, but we are happy to make recommendations based on your interests, plus make recommendations as needed on our surrounding neighboring towns and cities.
