Matai Yurts (Shygan Ranger Station)

The space 🛖 ABOUT THE YURT: Traditional wooden yurt with authentic carpets and the true spirit of nomadic life. Accommodates up to 6 guests. Inside: electricity, soft mattresses, fresh linens, and towels. Carved wooden doors and an open shanyrak dome provide excellent ventilation, keeping the yurt cool and comfortable even after the daytime heat. ⛰️ LOCATION & ATMOSPHERE: Shygan ranger station (7 km from Basshi) is the first checkpoint on the way to the Singing Dune. It sits between the Dzungarian Mountains on one side and the ranger's oasis on the other. Tourists pass through during the day, but at sunset, as the sun paints the steppe with golden light, the park empties. As darkness falls, absolute silence takes over, turning the location into a secluded island of peace under the starry sky. 💧 AMENITIES AT THE RANGER STATION: There is an artesian well with drinking water and an outdoor toilet on site. We are currently building a comfortable sanitary block (it will feature standard amenities inside: a flush toilet, sink, and shower). 🏘️ CARAVANSARAI CAMPSITE: Our base campsite is located in Basshi village, just a 7-minute drive away. Yurt guests are always welcome to come over to take a hot shower in our spacious shower rooms or order homemade breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. For a private picnic right by your yurt, we will pack homemade takeaway food sets for you. 🌾 RETREAT PHILOSOPHY: This is a choice for those who want to touch the nomadic lifestyle and find themselves one-on-one with the pristine Kazakh steppe and its spirit of freedom. Guest access 📝 LOCATION: Just a 9-minute drive from the Altyn-Emel National Park office and 7 minutes from Caravansarai, our base campsite. 🏘️ BASE CAMPSITE INFRASTRUCTURE: On-site grocery store, homemade dining, modern restrooms and spacious showers, traditional sauna (banya), laundry services, and other useful travel amenities. 🛋️ PEACE OF MIND: In case of any unexpected circumstances, you can always stay overnight at our base campsite. Other things to note 🌎 INTERNET & SIGNAL: We provide Wi-Fi at the campsite. There is a stable mobile signal and 4G in Basshi village. However, within the national park boundaries, mobile reception is virtually non-existent, and the internet does not work. 🚙 ROADS & TRANSPORT: There is no public transport to Altyn-Emel. The dirt roads inside the park are rough, bumpy, and unpaved. We highly recommend using 4x4 vehicles/SUVs and durable off-road tires. ⛽ GAS STATIONS: Major gas stations are located in Saryozek (if coming from Almaty) and Chundzha/Shonzhy (if coming from the Charyn Canyon). Basshi village has only one local gas station, which often runs out of fuel. 📝 PARK ENTRY PERMITS: You must purchase your entry permit at the national park visitor center in Basshi village (a 2-minute drive from our campsite). Payment must be made in cash only in Kazakh Tenge (KZT). The ticket office is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM (lunch break from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM). You are only allowed to enter and stay inside the national park during daylight hours. No permit is required to visit Basshi village or stay at our campsite.
