Description
The Barralach cottages are a remote mountain sheep farm hamlet with truly stunning views over Caragh Lake, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Dingle Bay and Dooks bay. We're on the Wild Atlantic Way, the Ring of Kerry and the Kerry Way. Our ancient cottages are stone-built and cosy. Activities include touring Kerry, hiking wild open mountains, biking, fishing, golfing, visiting Skellig Michael. In over 60 five-star reviews elsewhere we've been described as "the most beautiful spot in Ireland". The space Barralach is high on a hillside far from the crowds. Our 3 cottages provide space, comfort and independence for the different elements of your party. But the entire party come joyously together in the spacious Main cottage to enjoy the 14 seater dining table , the powerful wood stove, large kitchen, panoramic ever-changing views over Caragh Lake, The Macgillycuddy's Reeks, and of course our sheep and lambs, and our library too, and our party games! Outside, your mountain hikes into our hundreds of acres start right at the front door. The three cottages contain 5 bedrooms, (beds being 2 doubles, 5 singles, a bunk bed set for 2 and one infant’s cot), so that we can accommodate 11 adults and one infant. Guest access You are welcome all over our farmland and hundreds of surrounding acres. Other things to note Barralach and US Presidents. Hard to believe, but the little Barralach hamlet was a home for two of the greatest Irish American political names. The population census for our townland Treanmanagh in 1911 records the residence of 16 Regans and 4 Kennedys in that year, Irish speakers all, and no other names. And we are fortunate in having the memoirs of Sheila Kennedy who, with her brother John Kennedy, were the last occupants of the Barralach hamlet up to about 1960. She records the life of Kennedys in one Barralach cottage and Regans/Reagans in another. Here the two families lived in harmony. She recalls lively parties, fuelled by home-distilled poiteen, and much revelry. There was inter marriage between the families, for they were spirited folk, as they went on to show when migration took them to greatness in America. I, Peter, got to know both Sheila and John and can report they were fine handsome folk, well qualified to form part of great American Presidential families. We ourselves have not attempted to trace any actual family link. We invite their American cousins to do so! We now offer to our visitors the cottages, field walls, potato ridges and turf banks that they had formed with their own hands on the side of Sefin mountain, the Barralach Hamlet. Visitors will have a free run of our own land, about 9 acres and also the 500 acres of rough grazing land we hold in common with our fine neighbours, mainly O’Sheas, O’Connors and Pigotts. You will have our brochure of suggested activities from Barralach, including the Ring of Kerry, golf at Dooks and elsewhere, the Skellig Islands, the tetrapod tracks on Valentia Island, fishing on fresh and sea water, the Gap of Dunloe, Gallarus Oratory on the Dingle Peninsula, climbing Carrauntoohil, visits to Killarney, Kenmare and Sneem.
