The Old Sawmill, Lough Eske 18th Century Mill

A really lovely old 16th century sawmill which was converted in 2002 into a warm and comfortable home. The Mill has four bedrooms and a really cosy living/dining area. The property 5 mins walk to the Lough Eske Castle Hotel and Harveys Point Hotel is 20 mins walk The space The Mill is full of Character, its set in a lovely woodland and is only a few mins walk from two award winning hotels. Donegal Town with its excellent local shops and lively traditional Irish Pubs is three miles away. There are lots of Taxis available There is a 1930's showmans wagon next to the Sawmill which is available to let separately or with the main Mill . It sleeps two in a seperate double bedroom . Its really cosy with a wood burning stove and is full of character . It has a seperate bathroom and WC in an adjacent horsebox . There has been a mill on this site since the 17th century . The original mill was a flax mill and was part of the Donegal linen trade in the 17th and 18th century . The mill was then updated in 1850 as part of the renovation of lough eske castle across the road . It was converted to a sawmill with an unusual cast iron vertical turbine which is still in place . An extensive series of six mill ponds went up to lough banagher which fed the turbine . In the 1940s a diesel engine was installed and this powered the saw until the mill ceased operating in 1972. We bought a very sad looking sawmill in 2001 and spent two years restoring the building and converting it into the home that you see today . Guest access Lots of great walking nearby, fishing for trout and Salmon on Lough eske, Surfing , mountain biking. The woods around the sawmill are great for exploring .
