Guest access The world's second largest barrier reef runs parallel to the coast of Belize. However, the barrier reef is not the only factor that makes Belize one of the world's most popular destinations for scuba divers and snorkelers. Many of the small islands, known as 'cayes,' that lie off the coast of the Belizean mainland have their own coral reefs, with spectacular underwater gardens teeming with sea life of all types and sizes. The clear, warm, turquoise waters and the proximity of the barrier reef make Belize a favorite destination for divers and snorkelers. It is like swimming in an underwater aquarium. The 'cut' (channel) leading out to sea functions as a sort of 'fish freeway' for many large fish, including giant groupers, barracuda and nurse sharks, a timid and unaggressive shark species. Divers and snorkelers may enjoy a close encounter with a sea turtle. Fishing in Belize: Belize is a mecca for those interested in fishing. All kinds of fishing: spin, fly, trolling - can be experienced year-round, and the abundance of game fish guarantees excellent sport. The estuaries, inlets and mouths to the many rivers are known for their tarpon, snook and jacks. The lagoons and grass flats are known for the bonefish, permit and barracuda. The coral reefs support grouper, snapper, jack and barracuda while the deeper waters off the drop off are home to sailfish, marlin, bonito and dorado. A tour of the Monkey River where you will see crocodiles, howler monkeys and more, is a must. You will ride in a boat, but you will exit the boat to see the howler monkeys and have lunch. The lunch is an authentic Belizean meal of stew chicken with rice and beans. If water is not your thing, there are many land tours available. Land tours include Mayan ruins, Chocolate Farms, Banana Farms, Spice Farm, horse-back riding, Mayan villages and homes where you experience an authentic meal. In addition there are zip lines, beautiful waterfalls, many hiking opportunities and bird watching. Other things to note 9% Belize hotel tax is not included in the nightly rental fee listed. You will receive an additional request for funds for the hotel tax. The owner must collect the tax and submit it to the government of Belize. Guests must sign a rental contract/agreement when reservation is made.
