Description

Nestled at Matauri Bay Retreat, The Shearer’s Cottage offers simple charm and peaceful seclusion. Wander down to the beach or explore hidden bays, bush tracks, and local history. From the wide veranda, take in farmland, lake, and ocean beyond. Inside, unwind on the cosy couch with books, art-filled walls, TV & WiFi. With comfy beds, a basic well equipped kitchen, BBQ with a view, it’s a homely hideaway to truly relax. Dogs welcome. Your hosts, the artist and the gardener. The space The Shearer’s Cottage @ Matauri Bay Retreat sits privately away from the main house on our 30-acre retired sheep farm, overlooking a small lake, rolling farmland, and the sea. Recently renovated, the old shearer’s cottage retains a simple, peaceful vibe. A wide northwest-facing veranda with hammock and outdoor table is perfect for sunsets. Inside, polished wooden floors, art-filled walls, and beautiful views make it easy to forget the city is miles away. The kitchen is modest but well equipped, with tea, coffee, spices, fresh herbs from the garden, and a BBQ. The bathroom has a basic shower with separate toilet, plus a washer and dryer. WiFi works well for streaming and office needs. Outdoors, the property is being replanted with native bush and fruit trees. The cottage is surrounded by young peach trees, and guests are welcome to wander around the farm and lake. Water is tank-supplied and safe to drink—please use mindfully in dry spells. We’re connected to mains but boost our supply with solar panels, and encourage recycling and composting. This is a rural property, so while we run a strong pest management program, birds and bugs may drop by too. If you enjoy the art inside, you’re welcome to visit the artist’s studio. Guest access Guests are welcome to walk around the farm. If you bring a dog, please be mindful of sheep, and gates. The cottage area only is surrounded by farm fences. There is a lake below the cottage and you are welcome to explore or hang out down by the lake. Other things to note We are 20 - 30 minutes drive from Kaeo & Kerikeri for amenities, including petrol station, markets & supermarket. The Blue Bar is walking distance and operates as the local dairy/fish and chip shop located behind the fire station opposite our property. Down in Matauri Bay, the campground provides a small petrol station, shop, and boat launching. The cottage is in line of sight of the Vodafone tower. Spark is a little sketchy. The water supply is tank water & safe for drinking. We ask guests to be mindful of water use in the peak of summer. Electric car, charging is available. There is free boat launching at Te Ngarie & paid at Matauri Bay. A place to park and wash boat down is available.
