A fine Arts & Crafts country house set on a hillside garden terraced with excellent views of the Ceiriog Valley at Pontfadog near Llangollen North Wales. As a charity owned yoga retreat we are a STRICTLY VEGETARIAN establishment. Also, for health & safety reasons we can not HOST CHILDREN UNDER aged 7. N.B. The space This is a grade II listed Arts and Craft building surrounded by a lawned terrace and set in 10 acres of wooded hillside in the Ceiriog valley, 4 miles from Llangollen or Chirk. It hosts a fine library of around 2000 books on yoga, art, philosophy, religion, science and related spiritual subjects along with a growing library of about 300 feature films which are available for viewing during your stay. It was originally set up in the 1970's as the UK first permanent yoga retreat. Whilst this remains it's primary function to this day, rooms are often available for self-catering stays for people of any background. We welcome people of all faiths, or none, from all around the world as our quests at all times and enjoy engaging and celebrating our diversity and culture with them.. The building has a fascinating history connected to the White Rajas of Sarawak in Borneo. This, along with our core function as a retreat and study centre, makes Tan-y-Garth Hall Retreat an unusual, interesting, enriching and peaceful place to stay at affordable cost. However because of this, it is not a suitable building for younger children under the age of seven. Otherwise it is an ideal place for family, friends or colleagues, to get together in a beautiful location. Would best suit those seeking a peaceful environment to explore the area around Llangollen, Chirk and the uncrowded Berwyn Mountains to which the Ceiriog valley forms the gateway. Also suitable for outdoor pursuits groups, or as an alternative, cost- effective base, for day trips to Snowdonia and the North Wales coast. We offer simple, clean, comfortable rooms and superb views. If you think of us as a peaceful, upmarket hostel rather than a down market hotel, you are not likely to be disappointed! Please note this is a large country house. You are renting most, but not all of the building. This listing includes exclusive use of :- 7 bedrooms, some with seating areas (total 19 single beds), large well equipped kitchen, large dining room (seats up to 24), small dinging room (seats up to 14), large library/sitting room (seats up to 13) and 3 bathrooms. High speed Wifi is available throughout. The sitting room/library has a TV with surround sound audio for free viewing of films from our library of 300+ film titles. It is NOT connected to a TV arial but has a long HDMI cable input to connect laptops, plus Apple TV which allows devices to be cast to it. Modest consumption of alcohol e.g. with meals or for a celebration is permitted. Please also note that we are an all VEGETARIAN establishment and by this we mean, no meat or fish can me brought onto, stored, cooked or consumed on the premises. Eggs and dairy are fine. For meat eaters, we can recommend the nearby Swan Inn and Mulberry Inn and also the Hand Hotel at the far end of the valley, all of which are highly rated. Prior booking is recommended for them all. The Swan Inn is a five minute walk down a quite lane to Pontfadog village. It's a proper country pub, which offers good meat and vegetarian pub meals. The Mulberry Inn is located in the hamlet of Llwynmawr is about a mile and a half away and makes for a pleasant walk through the village of Pontfadog and along a country lane, or a five minute drive. Famed for its roaring open fireplace it boast fine offers for both meat eaters and vegetarians. The Hand Hotel at Llanarmon DC is at the far end. Although some 7 miles away, the 15 minutes drive by car is worth it for the scenery along the way and the excellent fare to be enjoyed on arrival. Guest access There are two of us living in the house to look after it, but we have our own separate rooms from your rooms. During mid-week, there may be other users around the building from time to time who come to do voluntary work e.g. in the office, but they will not be in your private spaces as listed to which you have exclusive private use. However, guests have shared use with residents of veranda, lawns, gardens and main hallway.
