The building was originally built as a hotel, and maintains a spacious and elegant lobby, with stained-glass windows, as part of this legacy. Several Brazilian "novelas" (TV dramas) have used the entrance of this building as a set for their shows. The building is located on a side street, away from the traffic and noise of Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, and the apartment is located in back, even further from the noise. The view from the window, although inward, looks across several courtyards and smaller houses, and enjoys plenty of air and sunlight (or dark curtains and air conditioning for the days when you just want rest and quiet). The apartment is a simple, but clean and attractive studio with a full-sized bed for a couple, plus a sofa bed that can sleep two more. There is a small kitchen area, with microwave, gas stove with two burners, and a small but full-sized refrigerator. The bathroom was just renovated with a new shower box, mirror and sink, and the apartment comes with a washing machine (but no dryer, as is the custom here in Rio - instead, the apartment provides the means to hang-dry your washables). It is located just a block and a half from Copacabana beach, near the famous Copacabana Palace. There's a great bar right across the street for the nights when you want to stay close to home, or taxis just around the corner. The apartment is also about a 5 minute walk to the Cardeal Arcoverde subway station, and (our favorite!) two of the city's rental bike stations. Your hosts are a mixed couple of Carioca (Rio) and Californian heritage, who love Rio. This is the only place we rent, so we're available to give you any tips you need for making the most of your visit, in English and/or Portuguese. Brazilian culture is as rich as any (maybe more), and we'd be happy to give you the low-down on local flavors of: * Capoeira * Samba * Forró * Carnaval * Chorinho * Bossa-nova * Jazz Note that this historic building is mostly residential, and there are doormen 24/7. It's a great place for couples and families, but not so great for people that are planning to have parties in the apartment. There's plenty to do around town, so let the apartment be the place you come for a rest to recharge your batteries! We hope you enjoy your visit to our wonderful city!
