Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer? Town: The village of Hellifield lies between Settle and Skipton at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It's a thriving, small community with a local pub, scattering of small shops, a renowned butcher's and historic railway station. The village nestles amongst the most picturesque rolling countryside, beside the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain - a region of scars, cliffs, caves and potholes. Hellifield grew as an important agricultural centre, where the moorlands of the Dales meet the pasturelands of the Ribble Valley, and boasted one of the most important livestock markets in the North of England for many years. It later developed into a railway centre and the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway crosses some of the most beautiful and inspiring upland scenery in the country. Natural attractions such as Malham Cove and Gordale Scar are within easy reach, as are the nearby Dales towns of Skipton and Malham. Hellifield is in the midst of excellent walking country and is a good base for touring the Dales, the Lake District and the Forest of Bowland.
