Luxurious eco-stay in rolling Devon hills. A short drive to the Jurassic Coast.
Let the outside in and relax in peaceful surroundings at The Sock Store, Devon. With plenty of space to unpack and unwind, you can take in the panoramic views from the comfort of the sofa or step outside on the decking and enjoy the rolling hills. Built to the highest eco-specification, The Sock Store features underfloor heating throughout, a wood stove for the winter months, wraparound decking outside, as well as all the amenities you may need away from home. The Sock Store was built in 2023 by local craftsmen, using locally sourced materials and with the highest eco standards in mind. We are lucky to be nestled in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with plenty of rambling walks from the doorstep and just a short drive to the stunning Jurassic Coast with its beaches and historic seafronts. Inside The Sock Store, you can enjoy far reaching countryside views through the floor to ceiling sliding doors. Stay cosy in front of the wood burning stove in the winter, or slide open the doors and let the outside in, in the summer. The decking has seating, so you can make the most of sunny weather. With oak floors throughout, the whole house benefits from climate controlled underfloor heating, via an air source heat pump. The living room features two generous sofas (one of which is a double sofa bed). You'll find board games and books, as well as a SmartTV with Netflix and iPlayer. The Ercol dining table comfortably seats four people. Make yourself at home in the bedroom. You can enjoy the views from bed, or open the French doors out onto the decking. There is a tall chest of drawers to unpack into, as well as shaker pegs, hangers, a full length mirror and a hair dryer. The bed is king size, with a pillow top Hypnos mattress, a locally made Devon Duvet, hypoallergenic pillows and fine Egyptian cotton sheets. Just next door, the bathroom has a generous rain shower and heated towel rails. Whether you'd like to cook for yourselves during your stay or not, the full kitchen has everything you could need - an electric hob and oven, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster, cafetière, tea pot, wok, as well as pots, saucepans, cutlery, dishes and glassware (including flutes for special occasions!). We keep essentials like salt, pepper, oils, tea, coffee and sugar ready for you, so you don't need to bring them with you. Seasonal offerings, such as eggs and our own vegetables will often make their way in for you as well. Dish soap and dishwasher tabs are provided. The utility room is outside the backdoor and has a full-size washer and tumble dryer for you to use during your stay. Here you'll find useful boot storage for any muddy wellies, as well as the ironing board and iron. Parking is included, with plenty of space next to our own cars on our tarmac drive. The local area is rich with natural beauty and things to see and do. Our closest town is Axminster, which has a weekly market on Thursdays, a butcher, fishmonger, health food shop, two supermarkets (Co-op and Tesco) and a mainline train station. A few miles further is the picturesque seaside town of Lyme Regis. With sand and shingle beaches, a long seafront, a bustling high street and old town mill, it's easy to spend a whole day here. Further west along the coast is Seaton (with a historic tramline and wetlands), Beer and Branscombe. Going east takes you to the pebbly beaches at Charmouth, beautiful walks up Golden Cap and on to Bridport and West Bay. Bridport is a vibrant town, with a brilliant twice-weekly market (Wednesdays and Saturdays), independent shops, four supermarkets, a vintage quarter (with monthly vintage market) and a great selection of places to eat. There are two fantastic gastropubs within 10 minutes drive of the property - The Tytherleigh Arms and The Cotley Inn. Axminster offers takeaway options, and of course, fish and chips in Lyme Regis is not to be missed. Walks from the front door take you along countryside paths and lanes, up the local beacon and deep into the Devon hills. An OS map is provided to help you orient yourself and discover the beauty of the local area. We have four friendly sheep and several chickens - they live in a paddock surrounding The Sock Store. You will have a great view of them from the decking, but we ask that you stay out of their field (there is electric fencing and slippery hillsides; we wouldn't want anyone to get hurt). Please close all gates behind you. We live in our own house and garden at the bottom of the property. We will be on hand for anything you might need; please ask.
