La Joya is perched on a hillside in San Agustinillo, built on three levels that climb the slope above the bay. At the bottom, an open air pool, shaded by trees and cleaned daily. On the second level, two queen suites sit side by side, each fully independent, with its own kitchen and bathroom. The third is the master, a one bedroom apartment with a king bed, and above it a pergola with hammocks where everyone ends up at sunset. Every level looks out over the ocean and the town below. Seven people sleep here without sharing a bathroom or negotiating breakfast, which is why two families, or a group of friends, tend to take the whole property. The bay here is calmer than most of this coast, the boats bring the catch in at dawn, and in season sea turtles nest and dolphins pass offshore. Mazunte is five minutes away, Zipolite fifteen, the Ventanilla mangroves twenty. Huatulco airport is roughly an hour and fifteen, Puerto Escondido an hour. The last stretch is a short, steep climb. It is brief, and people walk it, ride it, drive it or take a taxi to the door every day. Entry is by your own keypad code, so you arrive on your schedule with no keys to collect and nobody waiting on you. La Joya was built slowly, in local stucco, teak and stone, by someone who lives here. It is a place you settle into for a week, not a room you sleep in for a night. Guest access The main gate and each suite door open with a Yale keypad. Your codes are sent before you travel and they belong to you alone, so there are no keys to collect, no check in window to make, and nobody to meet at the door. If the flight lands at two in the morning, you still walk straight in. The codes are retired the day you leave. We are a message away the entire stay, and we live here, so ask us for anything: a taxi, a fishing trip, a table at the place that does not take reservations. Other things to note To reach La Joya San Agustinillo: Once you arrive in San Agustinillo along state highway 175, look for the convenience store named "El Grillo" in the center of San Agustinillo. Turn onto the cross street named Calle La Paz, which takes you down a dirt road. Continue straight, and when you reach the Y division in the road, stay left to continue going straight (do not take the right path at the division). Follow the road uphill.
