Located in the calm borough of Ajuda, at a short distance (350 metres) from the beginning of the northern beach of the peninsula of Peniche, one of the most sought after beaches by locals, nationals, and foreigners, lovers of nautical sports – surfing, kite surfing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, etc. Roughly at the same distance there are smaller beaches – Quebrado, Porto da Areia Norte - where swimming, padding, underwater fishing are possible. Enjoy the peaceful environment of Papôa where mother-nature offers us all the perfect setting for moments of serenity – listening to music, reading a book or magazine, sitting and watching the sea. An alternative for relaxation is the green area at the side of the church of Sra. da Ajuda where you find the tiles and painting recalling the life of the Peniche-born bishop of Mariana (Brasil) D. António Ferreira Viçoso (1787-1875). Our house is equipped with air-conditioning, Internet (optical fibre, wi-fi 500 Mbps), television (130 channels), microwave, electrical oven, induction hob, fridge, dish washer, washing machine, fume detector, an iron, surf boards. Within a half a kilometre radius we have four supermarkets, several restaurants (some with the take-away service), pizzarias, self-service laundries, cafés, surf schools where you can rent surf stuff (boards, etc.) and bikes. 2. Recreation, amusements At a close distance (150 metres) there’s the Parque do Baluarte where there’s the skating park. For those who love tennis, in this park there are the tennis courts; Close to the Municipal campsite (Avenue Mons. Bastos) there’s the water sports compound. Right opposite, there are the green fields along the harbour, functioning as an wide open-air gym, inviting children, dads and mums, and seniors for walks, jogging, or just relaxing on the green grass. Another attraction is the tremendous variety of boat trips around our coast: trips to the island of Berlenga, or the cliffs of Farilhões; diving and archaeological sight-seeing tours to the wrecks close to Berlenga; underwater fishing. Apart from above-mentioned activities, Peniche offers the perfect conditions for relaxation activities. «Peniche is a wonderful place for walking», is the testimony of many foreigners. And they say why: «because it’s plain». 3. On the cultural and religious side Art – Churches worth a visit – Santuário (shrine) de Nossa Sra. Dos Remédios, Nossa Sra. da Conceição, Nossa Sra. da Ajuda, with their walls covered with blue tiles depicting biblical motifs and the ceilings covered with paintings. There’s also St. Peter’s (igreja de S. Pedro) and Misericórdia. Don’t miss the Museu da Renda de Bilros, located right behind St. Peter’s church. The Fortress (close to the harbour) and the remnants of the former walls and military observation posts along the coastal line of the peninsula. Archaeology – The ship wrecks near the island of Berlenga About 200 metres from the house there’s the site of the station dating back from the early Roman occupation of what is now Portuguese (coastal) territory – 1st century AD – related to maritime activities. Here archaeologists unearthed what looks like a factory (or warehouse) which processed fish for exportation and supported fishing activity. The findings are scattered over an area of 400 square metres and comprise ceramic vases – amphoras – as containers of oil and fish. Another archaeological site of historical importance is the burial site of the Spanish seafarers and members of the indian tribe Tupac Amaru (Peru) sailing from Callao (Peru) to the Spanish port of Cadis (Spain) on the warship S. Pedro de Alcantara The ship ran aground on the rocks of Papôa (northern side of the peninsula of Peniche on 28th February of 1786. Of the 400 people on board 128 died.
