Our guests enjoy exclusive access to the property, with the whole space reserved just for you throughout your stay. While your privacy is assured, you may occasionally spot local wildlife passing by. Other things to note Airbnb, Google, and Waze often share incorrect details about this area in their listings. 1. There are no national parks in Monteverde. All parks here are privately owned, and the nearest national parks are far away. 2. Arenal is about four hours from here, not one hour as Airbnb suggests. 3. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve is not a national park. Starting December 8th, day passes will no longer be available. Visitors can choose from three routes, each with a set time limit (1, 1.5, or 2.5 hours), and each loop costs $29 per person. There are other cloud forests you can visit. If you need more information, feel free to ask. 4. We are at the top of the mountain range, so please avoid bringing shorts and sandals. You’ll need closed-toe shoes, long pants, a light jacket, and a poncho. 5. Google and Waze do not account for road conditions or traffic on some parts of the route, so travel times may be longer than expected. 6. Monte Verde County has seven communities. Only Monteverde and Cerro Plano have cloud forests. Santa Elena, Los Llanos, La Lindora, and Cañitas are at lower elevations, and San Luis is the lowest to the northeast. Santa Elena is the only one with a small town center. The others, like Cerro Plano and Monteverde, have small central areas but are not full towns. Many nature lovers know about the local wildlife, but some visitors are surprised and may complain. 1. Every house here has bugs because we live in the tropics. Bugs are drawn to lights, so leaving doors open with lights on can attract them inside. 2. We avoid using chemicals that harm wildlife, including insect repellents. Please use eco-friendly insect repellent wipes and avoid spraying in the forest. 3. Depending on the season, three types of bugs may appear suddenly and in large numbers. Queens and males of leaf-cutter ants fill the roads and forests during the wet season for a few days. Thousands fly around looking for new nests or to mate, but there is no set schedule for this. Army ants can take over entire buildings for a few hours, clearing out any critters inside. These ants travel in large groups and will kill anything in their way. When this happens, the best thing to do is leave the house for a few hours. Tiny species of lawn shrimps appear out of nowhere during the wet season. They love the light and are small enough to come through screen doors. They are harmless and will be dead by morning. They typically come out in the light and always manage to get inside every house in Monteverde and Cerro Plano. 4. Other animals may come inside if doors are left open. Feeding wildlife is illegal, so please keep doors closed. If you open them, stay nearby to make sure animals do not enter to take food or cause damage. Coatis and white-faced monkeys may still come in even if you are there. 5. Communication is important. If you have any issues, let your host know right away. The host is a local wildlife expert, guide, and professor, and will reply in the evenings after work. Feel free to reach out with any questions, and we will respond as soon as possible. 6. Monteverde is not a city and is far from one, which is part of its charm. Because we are far from large towns, appliances and electrical devices are expensive. We want you to feel comfortable, but please handle everything with care. Be careful with all electrical devices and unplug them during electrical storms. Thank you. 7. Please plan your tours before your trip to make sure there is space for the activities you want to do. 8. Please take off your shoes when you enter the house. Leaving shoes by the entryway is a local tradition, since cleaning floors and mats is hard during the long wet season. 9. Don't leave the shoes outside. Please check your shoes before you put them on. 10. Please help us keep the house clean, and do not use the white towels to clean up messes or as rugs. 11. Please do not eat in the bedrooms. A large dining table is available for meals. Thank you
