Isana House - a tranquil oasis
Isana House, or "House of the Rising Sun", was designed by Andrew Melesi in a Swahili-style and is positioned on the plot so that it catches the breezes from the north-east as well as the south-east, depending on the time of the year. It is furnished comfortably and simply in an uncluttered style, with beautiful locally-made Swahili and East African furniture. Each bedroom has its own sea facing verandah and our local team, who live on site, are there to make your stay special. Karibuni sana! The space The property is approached via a coral surfaced single track road that starts just south of Kilifi's creek bridge on the Mombasa Road and passes through the Kilifi Plantation, a dairy and sisal farm, before turning towards the sea. On entering the property through a set of wooden gates, ahead of you will see Isana house while either side of the drive way, we have planted a variety of indigneous trees and plants to recreate a natural habitat for birds and other animals. The entrance to the house has a highly carved swahili-style doorway that leads into a courtyard with a view through to the infinity swimming pool and sea beyond. The whole house is designed to be open to the environment and is set up as a place to relax, watch the amazing sun rises and view the turtles that often swim below the look out. Downstairs is a large sitting room, with a bedroom either side, which leads through to a terrace, the pool and the sea facing gardens. Meals can be taken inside or out, and do ask the Chef for menu options as he can source fresh seafood and other produce to your needs. The swimming pool is 15m wide and has steps into it from the terrace area, with sun loungers and umbrellas next to it. It sits above the terraced lawn area that leads down to the look out and cliff edge. Also we have provided a tunnel with steps down to the sea level - swimming off the coral shelves below the cliff and access to a small beach to the south of the property is possible around low tide. [Please note that neither the pool or cliff edge are fenced so we do not recommend renting the property if you are bringing young children with you. Further we will ask you to sign an indemnity against potential accidents that may occur while on the property.] Upstairs there is a "chill out" area with two large day beds on it, with the master bedroom on one side and bedroom two on the other. Both these bedrooms have air conditioning that can be requested for an extra charge. To the back of the house is a roof space for taking your sun downers. All four double bedrooms have their own verandahs for privacy, and off the main bedroom, each has a dressing room area and shower/bathroom. Lastly our team at Isana House is there to make your stay special. The team includes a well trained Chef, who can cook local specialities as well as international and vegetarian dishes. Also, if you provide him with a cash float, he can manage all your food purchase requirements, including local fish and shell fish directly from Kilifi fishermen. Also there are two housekeepers, one of whom can provide massages, and a gardener. All live on site except the gardener and they are included in the booking price. If you enjoy the service that they provide, please do consider tipping them when you leave. Guest access The whole house is for your use as the resident staff have their own quarters next to the entrance gate. Other things to note Air conditioning is available in the upstairs two double bedrooms only and guests are requested to use it judiciously - please do close windows and the bathroom door when using, switch it off when the room is not in use and try to limit use primarily to overnight 1800hrs and 0600hrs. It should be noted that the back up power system does not support the AC units. We do not recommend bringing young children to the property as the swimming pool is not fenced and neither is the cliff edge at the bottom of the garden. We do not permit large parties or weddings at the property as the house is not set up for this.
