The Sabbatical House
The Sabbatical House
Description
Set in a coffee lot by a unique wetland area, this home is about twenty minutes away from Antigua. Still, it feels a world away. You'll spend peaceful days in the lush gardens and walk to the Mayan towns of San Antonio and Santa Catarina Barahona. Should you like, you can also get to know the kids who visit the "Caldo de Piedra" library next door. (Proceeds go to support it.) Pickup and drop-off from Antigua is provided (weekdays, up to 6 pm.-restrictions apply) Nature-, book-friendly. The space The house is set in about a half square block of coffee and fruit trees. There are stone paths to a deck area by an (unnamed) wetland, which locals use to harvest "tul" - a kind of reed - which they use to make baskets and mats ("petates"). The wetland is full of life: you'll hear frogs, ducks, and lots more birds that you may identify (but I cannot). The effect could be described as "lakeside". The place is truly magical. While the house is well equipped, don't expect luxury. The furniture is rustic and made of pine. You will have the doors open, letting in the breeze but also the occasional sound from the nearby town and and probably some insects. You will be accompanied by Sally and Estrellita our chatty dogs. They are extremely friendly. The library is a few steps away, and is open 2pm to 5 pm. You are welcome to join in. The children are between the ages of 7 and 12, mostly. Guest access You are welcome to the gardens and the "avistadero", overlooking the marsh. Other things to note Fire pit for romantic evenings, under a starry sky. BBQ grill for memorable "asados", using real charcoal and matches.
