Come unplug in a fully restored 1830’s corn barn tucked among the ferns and maple trees. Park your car and enjoy a short hike up to your private woodland retreat. This cozy restored timber frame cabin is the perfect spot to relax, slow down, and unwind. Guests are welcome to explore the 50 acres of woodlands, meadows and gardens. The space For artists and writers, it is the ideal haven. Let the surrounding nature quiet and renew your spirit and inspire your work. For adventure seekers, it is the ideal home base. We are centrally located near hiking, beautiful lakes, kayaking, fishing, golfing, mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding. BATHROOM & SHOWER Our off-the-grid cabin features a seasonal propane heated outdoor shower, and non-potable running water in the indoor sink. Both the shower and the sink are shut off when the nighttime temps reach freezing (usually mid October) and turned on when danger of freezing has passed (usually mid May). A short walk from the cabin you will find the outhouse style toilet and sink for handwashing. Both the cabin and outhouse use rainwater collection. KITCHEN & HEATING In the kitchen you will have a propane cook stove, and a wood cook stove for cooking and to keep you warm on chilly nights. The wood cook stove is the only source of heat inside the cabin, so working knowledge of fire-starting is a must in the colder seasons! We do not have refrigeration, but provide a Yeti cooler for use during your stay. In the cabin you will find plates, cups, bowls, utensils, simple cooking tools, a kettle, a saucepan, a frying pan, a roasting pan, a coffee grinder, a french press, a mixing bowl and a strainer. There will be a few basic spices and oils provided. BEDROOM The full second floor bedroom features a wall of windows looking out into the forest. Upstairs will also find a queen bed, comfortable seating area, dresser and writing desk. The first floor trundle bed converts from a comfortable couch to two additional sleeping spaces (twin beds). We will provide bedding and towels. HISTORY OF THE CABIN This cabin was originally a corn barn, which is a unique style of structure that was used to dry and store corn on the cob on early Vermont farms. This structure came from East Montpelier. It was lovingly disassembled, restored, and then re-erected by the team at Green Mountain Timber Frames. If you wish, you can see much of this restoration process documented on the TV show Restoration Road with Clint Harp, season 2 episode 1. Guest access The cabin is a 10 minute hike from the parking spot. Guest vehicles are not permitted to drive up to the cabin. Please be prepared to carry in your belongings and supplies. Please bring weather appropriate foot gear, which may include hiking shoes in the warm months, and snow shoes in the winter. We may be able to assist with transportation to the cabin when the road is accessible to vehicles. There is no electricity or WiFi in the cabin. Other things to note Solar and battery powered lights are provided. The only source of heat is the wood cook stove. We will provide firewood, but you should be able to start a fire on your own to stay here in the cooler months. The running water in the sink is collected rain water, and is not suitable for drinking. We will provide 5 gallons of drinking/cooking water. The water to the shower and kitchen sink are propane heated. We ask that you be mindful of the resource and not leave the water running when you are not using it. In freezing temps or times of severe drought, there may not be running water. The collector for running water is disconnected and drained for the winter when temps reach the 30s. The second floor is accessed by the original corn crib staircase. The steps are steeper than modern day stairs and may be difficult for some to maneuver. You may choose to sleep on the downstairs trundle bed. The cabin is rustic and items provided are minimal. Please let us know if you have specific needs and we will do our best to accommodate.
