Other things to note Useful information about Armenia: Safety – for many reasons, Yerevan can be considered one of the safest cities in the world. Walking the streets late at night is much safer here than in many European cities during the day. In fact, the crime rate is very low, often escaping the attention of the average tourist. For example, we can leave the car unlocked on the street and find it untouched and intact. Tourists, like any other citizens, feel completely safe. Orientation — the city is very easy to navigate, even if you are here for the first time and you do not have a map or someone who could help you. You are unlikely to get lost in Yerevan. The city center consists of ring roads and intersecting streets, and the city itself is small (excluding the outskirts and remote areas). The streets are crowded with vehicles: buses and taxis. However, you can get to your destination on foot, as the distances are not very long. If you get lost, you can stop any passerby and ask for directions; they will be happy to accompany you to show you the way. Currency – National currency – Armenian dram. In shops and other shopping centers, trade is conducted only in the national currency. There are no problems with the exchange of foreign currency, as almost everywhere and in many stores there are exchange offices where you can exchange any currency. In large shopping centers in Armenia, you can use credit cards. There are also several banks and ATMs where you can withdraw money. Credit cards are accepted in restaurants and cafes. Tips – there are places where tips are included in the price, and on average they are 5-7%. In this case, you don't need to leave a tip. In other cases, it is customary to leave tips at an average of 10% of the price. Language – The official language in Armenia is Armenian. In Yerevan, many people (mostly young people) speak English, French, German, and Spanish. Most of the population speaks Russian almost fluently. Only in some very remote villages there may be some difficulties with the language, and even then not often. There is no language barrier in Armenia. Traffic – tourists usually notice one single drawback in Yerevan – street traffic. The city is not designed for so many cars, so the streets are often crowded. Although traffic jams are rare here, the abundance of cars does not harmonize with the comfortable streets of Yerevan. Therefore, it is better to walk the streets than to take public transport. Transport – transport services for residents of the capital are provided by buses, trolleybuses, minibuses and the metro. Just pay 150 drams and you can go wherever you want. However, it is better to take a taxi, which are plentiful in Yerevan. They are very easy and cheap to catch. Food – you can eat almost everywhere. Wherever you are in the city, you will find a snack bar, cafe or restaurant every 100 meters. If you are in the city center, you will find a place to eat every 10 meters. Here you will find dishes of any national cuisine: Armenian, Arab, Georgian, European, and Chinese. Prices may vary. In general, food in Yerevan is cheaper than in Europe. Water — you can buy bottled water in every grocery store; all brands are produced in Armenia. You can also drink tap water at the hotel or at home. It is absolutely safe to drink and even tastes good. On the streets and in the courtyards of Yerevan you can see certain springs, which in colloquial Armenian are called "pulpulak". These unique, bubbling jets one meter high offer clean, tasty Armenian water. Come and have a drink. It's absolutely free! General information — as a rule, souvenirs should be bought at the open market "Vernissage", which is open on Saturdays and Sundays. The best Armenian cognac is produced at the Yerevan Cognac Factory. Here you are guaranteed the lowest prices and the highest quality. Wine can be bought at any store and at the winery. Most of Armenia is located in the highlands (from 1000 to 2500 m above sea level), so it is advisable to have warm clothes with you.
