Other things to note Langholm is a charming small Georgian Market Town nestled in Dumfries & Galloway, close to Gretna Green, Hadrian's Wall, Hermitage Castle and Kyagu Samye Ling, the biggest Buddhist temple in Europe. The town is surrounded by stunning countryside and occupies part of the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve. Whita Hill dominates the skyline with it's impressive Monument and if visiting it is well worth a walk up to the summit to see it as well as the monolithic and contemporary MacDiarmid Memorial sculpture half way up. Wildlife is abundant around the area and Whita has hosted a Hen Harrier breeding programme in recent years. There are a dozen beautiful walks right from the doorstep of Townhead House South so make sure to have a browse through the walking guides and check out the large scale Ordinance Survey Map of the area located in the Hallway. A trip around 'the Lodge Walks' to see the Duchess Bridge is a must do, as well as the 'Roon Hoose'. If Trail Running, Sportive or Mountain Biking is your thing you'll be spoiled for choice! There's also 4 rivers that meet along the banks of the town so plenty of opportunities for canoeing or kayaking. The town hosts a Farmers Market once a month and there is a butchers, greengrocer, chemist and Co-op in the town, not to mention First Bite, a charming cafe, and Pelosis Italian Ice Cream shop, a family run institution that's operated in the town for decades. Be sure to have a look around Latimers too, an Aladdins Cave of homeware! There are a number of pubs on the High Street offering home cooked meals and local ales from Borderlands Brewery which is located in the town. Langholm is a friendly place and has a thriving community scene, with a local rugby, football, bowling, running, walking and arts & crafts scene. Local artwork can be bought from the Gallery on High Street, with some exceptional pieces available. There are 2 good quality children's play parks in the town, located at the Kilngreen on the A7 and the Buccleugh Park, which boasts an adventure themed abundance of equipment. Located o my a few miles out of the town is Gilnockie Tower, ancestral home of the Clan Armstrong. Here you can immerse yourself in the life and times of the Border Reiver days and gain a deeper understanding of Scotland's rich historical legacy. The tower is also home of the Neil Armstrong: First Man on the Moon collection, with items and artifacts from Neil and his family.
