A beautiful, bold contemporary fitout plus high-ceilinged, pre-war elegance. On the fourth floor, with a northerly corner position and windows on three sides so there's lots of light. A well-stocked pantry, good linen, a little library and a deep bath will conjure a sense of home. In the surrounding streets you'll find some of Sydney's best wine bars, cafes, restaurants and gourmet grocers. Harbourside parks and water views are a few minutes walk away, and the city is one stop on the train. The space This unique apartment was the first designed by architect William Smart of Sydney's Smart Studio. It was featured in the 2000s design bible, 50 of the World's Best Apartments and garnered various other design awards. It's a small but very efficient space: lots of storage and concealed appliances. We've furnished it with favourite vintage and well-designed things. Bed linen is OEKO-TEX® certified, there's a natural latex topper on a new Queen mattress and all cleaning products are non-toxic. Though we suspect you'll be eating out much of the time, given the choice on your doorstep, there's gas hobs and a convection combo microwave for cooking or preparing readymade meals from one of the neighbourhood's excellent providores, as well as eclectic tableware with which to enjoy it. Likewise you're spoilt for choice here for cafes, but there's also a choice of coffee makers if you’d prefer to have a cup at home. We'll however stock the pantry and fridge with basics for your arrival: feel free to let me know if you have any preferences such as plant milks, GF, coffee or tea, non-alc drinks, etc. We don’t have TV, but the wifi is reliable and we can source a projector for long-stay guests, if screening is vital for you. A heater can be provided for those rare cold Sydney nights, or a fan for summer (no AC, but there's plenty of airflow). There are clothes lines up on the roof terrace, we have an indoor rack or there's big $5 DIY dryers at the friendly laundry in the arcade across the laneway. They also do bag washes and dry cleaning. The building is of 1930s vintage and its beauty lies in being far from generic, be prepared for a few atmospheric quirks. Guest access It's yours exclusively, apart from the small roof terraces which is shared with neighbours. Other things to note Ours is a vibrant, inner city location, so expect happy human voices to drift up from the laneway until around 10pm. There's very little traffic noise and the residents of the building are respectful of others during evening hours. Sydney is warm and lush city in summer, but that means insect life is abundant, not all of it pretty and exotic. The building and our apartment are regularly treated for cockroach infestations by a professional operation using safe, best practice products and techniques. They still are, however, often a visible presence, especially in summer. Please note this is common across all apartment buildings in the neighbourhood, and other areas in Sydney with a denser housing mix. It is not linked to hygiene or building maintenance. We can provide a cockroach spray but we don't encourage guests to use it as we would like our apartment to remain as low-tox as possible. Australians like renovate, and while we'll certainly let you know when booking if any scheduled works are going on in the building.
