Red Ochre Kolkata Studio Apt

If you're a single traveller, not taller than 5’7”, who's looking for a place that's centrally located, AND gives you an intimate glimpse into the fascinating street life of Calcutta, Red Ochre Studio Apt is for you! In other words, the room overlooks the street and has a low ceiling. Street noise is 80% cut out by glass panes. It's quite silent at night. The space In Red Ochre - Studio Apartment, you will get a single room on the mezzanine floor. This is very typical of Calcutta homes. Local laws mandated that houses of a certain plot size build a garage. So most old houses had a room above the garage, connected to the ground floor. Because of this, the ceiling in this room is low. It’s 6'2" from ceiling to floor! The attached bathroom has an even lower ceiling! It’s 5’9” from ceiling to floor. My son who is 6’ has to stoop in this bathroom. He sits on a stool that has been kept there for this purpose, to bathe. I am 5’4” and have no problems at all. :) So please keep your height in mind if you choose this room. This room overlooks the busy street outside. So you must be prepared for ambient noise through the day. I have put sound cutting glass panes in front of the original windows, and this cuts 80% of the outside noise out. However, you can still hear car horns. Nights are silent, because unlike most other cities, Calcutta, more or less, winds down at night. But the flip side to the ambient noise is the fascinating peep into the busy street life of Calcutta. There are tiny kiosks selling tea and snacks below, which has a continuous clientele. If you understand Bengali, you will get to overhear interesting conversations! This room has a small kitchenette, with modular shelves. A part of the kitchen cabinet can open out as a small dining table. The room is equipped with a fridge, a microwave oven, an electric kettle, a rice cooker, a toaster and an induction oven. Tea bags, coffee and milk sachets, with sugar, jaggery and no-sugar alternatives are also provided. Breakfast will not be provided. The room has a 6 ½ ft bed with a 3” mattress, a writing desk and chair, another comfortable chair to relax on, a small cabinet and open shelves. There is a window AC. There is a bedside lamp and a standing lamp, to provide soft lighting. The fan is a pedestal fan. There is a steel cupboard in the room, which will be kept locked. There is also a 42" Smart TV! Netflix and Amazon Prime are preloaded. The attached bathroom is spacious and has a WC with a bidet shower and a geyser to provide for a hot shower, if required. However, this is not an overhead shower. It is a handheld, telephone shower. There is a small verandah that leads out from the bathroom, where you can hang your clothes out to dry, or keep your suitcases.. There is a secured personal wi-fi connection, only used in Red Ochre. The service provider is Airtel. The speed is 100Mbps. There is no live in caretaker. She, along with the cleaner, will only come when you require them, to address house keeping needs. Apart from the studio apartment, Red Ochre is also available in two other options: i. the entire ground floor house with two bedrooms, one attached and another separate bathroom, with a living room, a fully functional kitchen, and a spacious backyard. ii. the entire ground floor house with a single bedroom and an unattached separate bathroom, with a living room, a fully functional kitchen, and a spacious backyard. Guest access The studio apartment is separate from the rest of the house. You have to climb one flight of stairs to get inside. Other things to note Red Ochre is centrally located, with everything you need, literally within 300 metres! Two nursing homes, chemists, fine dining restaurants providing continental and Chinese cuisine, small picturesque cafes, Flury's takeaway centre, and kiosks selling street food are right outside the house! A little further away is a heritage marketplace, with its inimitable smells and ambience. Local designer clothing shops have popped up all around the neighbourhood. Dakhinapan Shopping Complex with its ethnic state emporia and quaint local shops selling jewellery, sarees and other wares is just a 5 minute walk away. One of the biggest malls, the South City Mall, is just 700 metres away. There are some reliable tourist guides, who will curate a tour catering to your specific requirements. While Calcutta is known for its affordable street food, it is also a place where you have affordable fine dining. The restaurants in Park Street are well known of course, but in recent years, many small cafes and restaurants have popped up in South Calcutta. Jodhpur Park is no exception. Please do walk around to discover places yourself. But in case you wish to partake of home cooked Bengali meal, I will provide you the numbers of vendors, who will deliver simple but delicious meals to the door. Calcutta is one of the busiest and noisiest cities in the world. Red Ochre's remarkable location in the heart of the city, near the main road. means that while the outside noise is very muted inside the house, it will not be absolutely silent.
