This is the very simple home of an elderly woman whose kids have all left home. This house is very close to Queen's Park Savannah. Each room has it's own bathroom and fridge. Breakfast or being picked up at the airport can be provided/arranged at an additional cost. If you are not sure about your stay here feel free to book a few nights and then extend once you are here because there is always a room available. This is not like a hotel and is not fancy or chic. It's a very simple place. The space Welcome to Burrokeet Homestay. This is a homestay, not a Hotel. This is someone's home. It is not perfect, it is not new, it is not fancy and it is not chic. To understand this listing you are going to have to understand the story of my mother. My mother is a Caribbean woman of retirement age. She was born in Grenada in a time before feminism ever made its way to the shores of the Caribbean. She married my Trinidadian father, had many children and lived a relatively traditional lifestyle. Her and my father raised us with all that they had. My mother stayed at home to raise us while my father ran a shop in Port of Spain. While she raised us she also worked. She worked at the shop helping my father and she ran her own small business as a seamstress. Unfortunately even though all of her work was very real and tiring and had value, much of it was not paid directly or taxed as full time work and therefore she does not receive a pension of her own. My father who was a bit older than her passed away after more than 40 years being married to her and his pension can not be transferred to her nor does she qualify for welfare level pension. This is because the current "means test" to be eligible for pension says that one must have either worked and paid into the tax system for enough full time years, or one must prove that they are too poor to qualify for help at an older age. She is not poor enough because she owns the house that you are considering staying in. This listing exists within my family home. My family home belongs to my mother. The way things are she either has to sell the house, use up that money first and then apply for some sort of pension or she has to keep working to earn money.. or her lovely many children have to take care of her, which we absolutely do not mind doing. This is not really a sob story, because she really does have some lovely children who will take care of her if she is ever in need. But she has always been a relatively self sufficient person. She wants to spend her time doing things. She wants to earn her own money and to meet new people. So her choice and will is to keep the house and share it with you.. travellers, to hear your stories and share time and space with people from all over the world who want to experience Trinidad. But again this is not a hotel, this is a home. An authentic traditional Trindadian home. If you want to see how people in this part of the world live, you are welcome to book. It's a home filled with visitors and sometimes family and cats (who stay mostly outdoors in the parts of the home that you won't have to come into contact with. If you have high standards and want a space that is hotel like and serene and created just to please the customer this is not the place to book. This house is as it is. It was created to house a family and it did that. And now those kids live in continents all over the world and those rooms are free and so if you are coming to Trinidad and do not want a hotel experience but rather just somewhere central, simple and not fancy in any way shape or form, then I implore you to BOOK with us. Also it is true that we have very nice reviews but again that is not a reflection of the home but rather of very kind and nice travellers who happened to like my mother.
