Other things to note ________ ANGLING Port St Mary is ideally located close to various shore fishing marks. The Alfred Pier, Port St Mary Just a five-minute drive away, this breakwater is the most convenient shore fishing mark and you can take your car right to the end of the pier! A spinning rod, fixed spool and 12lb line will handle most situations. Freelining works well and floatfishing with fish baits cast slightly further out ( 30 yds or so) will pick up callig (pollack). There are also coalies and large wrasse to be had, along with mackerel. Port Erin Bay An excellent area with a variety of options. Lots of species available and some specimen fish and you can usually find somewhere to fish in all but the harshest North Westerly wind. You can contact fish at pretty much any state of the tide. The Old Breakwater on the seaward side is good for mackerel, coalie and callig on spinners and float. Lure fishing can pick up lots of mackerel very quickly if the shoals are there, also the odd big callig. Conger are available right beneath your feet and a boat rod works best for them. The Raglan Pier is a good spot for plaice and flounder during the first two hours of the flood. Casting out across the bay will catch dogfish and whiting after dark. Scarlett Point There are multiple marks around here, all you have to look for is access to deeper water (and it gets very deep!). You can usually find somewhere to fish no matter what the state of the tide, however be wary as some spots can be cut off. Bottom fishing at range with large fish baits will find dogfish, huss and ling, whilst fishing a ledge next to deep water with crab or limpet can result in large wrasse. Float fishing will fetch you callig, coalie, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, corkwing wrasse, goldsinny and mackerel. Castletown Harbour The large breakwater is an underrated spot and provides good light tackle fishing for callig, coalie and wrasse, particularly in the evening/night. Most fish are close-in and float fishing with sandeel or mackerel will catch most species. The small breakwater is also good at night time. Bottom fishing will produce dogfish, coalie, callig, silver eels, flounder and the odd surprise. The Nautical Museum on the opposite side of the river mouth sees some flat rocks which shelve off onto a muddy bottom. Access is by some steps next to the Nautical Museum. Spinning swith small lures will pick up callig and coalie whilst float fishing hardback crabs can pick up some very large wrasse. Gemini Charter Boat This twin-engine 35 foot catamaran based in the harbour is operated by Bob Taylor and offers sightseeing and wildlife trips as well as fishing. AirBnb does not allow weblinks but further details can easily be found through an internet search for 'Gemini Charter Port St Mary'. ________ DIVING We are diver-friendly, with storage and drying areas for kit and equipment. Discover Diving, the Isle of Man's only scuba and snorkel centre, just a few doors down from Waverley House, is run by Steve Cowley and Michelle Haywood who are both experienced divers and instructors. They offer training from beginner up to instructor level, have a diving charter service for visitors and a busy dive club for local divers. They also have a well stocked dive shop and service regulators, repair suits and test cylinders. This is open all year round to provide everything you need for snorkel, scuba and technical diving, from equipment to training, to trips and regular dives. Dives Nearby: The Burroo (>40m), with its extremely diverse and plentiful marine life offers a truly magnificent dive. In fact, in areas exposed to the fast flow, it is something of a challenge to find a single square centimetre of bare bedrock, so abundant is the life here. Numerous experienced divers, underwater photographers and marine biologists acclaim it to be one of the best in the British Isles. Outer Breakwater and Craw Row, Port Erin (12m) is an easy dive for navigation. You will have a great view of conger eels, wrasse including cuckoo, ballan, corkwingand tompots hiding in the holes (so take a small torch!) At night this site comes alive with squat lobsters feeding along the sea bed and if you're lucky, you might see bright orange octopus. The Sugarloaf Caves (12m), situated just around the corner from Port St Mary, are an excellent dive site for all levels. The caves are only accessible by boat, but it's just a short hop from the harbour. Lying behind the Sugarloaf Rock itself, you have some shelter for an easy kit-up and entrance, before descending down to a maximum depth of around 12m, and journeying into the cave system. You will see the walls covered in hydroids, sponges and anemones, often fighting for room! The deep Cave of the Birds is a common home for friendly seals who are known to follow and play with you all the way back to your boat. Peel Castle and Fenella Beach (10m). This can be dived as a loop without the need to double back, so you can spend all your timee exploring new areas. On your way around the castle to Fenella Beach, you'll head past a variety of backdrops, starting with a kelp forest, before hitting a few caves, and then around the corner to the rocky sides of the cliff face. The seals are extremely friendly and will play all day if you let them! Snorkelling Discover Diving's snorkel safaris are a great way to explore even more of the beautiful Manx coastline. All the equipment is provided for small supervised group sessions. Available from ages 6 upwards, so ideal for families. In addition, Discover Diving has developed a series of 7 graded snorkel trail guides for various locations around the South of the Isle of Man. ________ GOLF The Isle of Man is well-served with golf courses, the nearest three to Waverley House being the following: Port St Mary Golf Course (Nine hole) Open seven days a week and situated off Kallow Point Road.
