Beautiful 1923 home with lots of character - we are just across the bridge from Hancher, and a short walk from Iowa City's downtown and the plentiful dining options there. Long term guests love to utilize our guest kitchen. Breakfast included. The light-filled spaces of the solarium dining room, the parlor and the library offer the ideal setting for visiting academics, families and independent travelers from all over the world. Our facilities include clean, comfortable guestrooms, some with shared baths. Our longer term guests enjoy utilizing our fully equipped guest kitchen. It is not uncommon for the hosts to uncork a bottle of wine to share with guests as they sit on the front patio, or enjoy the backyard furniture as something delicious sizzles on the grill. The light-filled spaces of the solarium dining room, the parlor and the library offer the ideal setting for visiting academics, families and independent travelers from all over the world. Guests are often entertained by our in-house special events, delicious weekend breakfasts and occasional group dinner. Our facilities include clean, comfortable guestrooms, some with shared baths. Accommodations are located on all four levels - fully accessible to our disabled guests via elevator. The Historic Phillips House is located in the historic neighborhood of Goosetown, named after Bohemian immigrants who settled here and raised geese in their yards in the 1850’s. Originally built in 1923 for University of Iowa Business School Dean Chester A. Phillips and his wife, Mary. Our location on North Linn Street is just a few blocks away from some of the best restaurants in Iowa City. The Webster has an eclectic menu and gets rave reviews from our guests who walk the five short blocks to this neighborhood restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. The Webster was one of 50 new restaurants of note across the USA featured in the New York Times. Next door is Oasis, for more than 20 years making the best hummus in the Midwest, and offering a variety of Middle Eastern fare. A few doors down is the famous Hamburg Inn #2, a diner frequented by politicians and celebrities alike. Across the street is Brix, a wine bar offering charcuterie, sandwiches, soups and lighter fare to go with their wide selection of wines by the glass. The solarium breakfast view to the west overlooks the Iowa River where bald eagles soar in the winter sky. Just beyond is the recently rebuilt Hancher Auditorium, a 192,000-square-foot highly regarded performance venue. Though public transportation via bus can be easily accessed, truly the best way to see Iowa City is on foot. The Historic Phillips House is a short stroll away from downtown Iowa City and the University of Iowa main campus, yet far enough that the neighborhood is quiet and family-filled. We cater to UI Visiting Professors, Graduate Students - IRW and others, visiting UIHC nurses, and others looking for a comfortable and welcoming home away from home. Whether it's two weeks, or two years, the Phillips House is a special place in Iowa City. Long term rates of course available.
