Other things to note The Old City comprises the oldest part of the city, being one of the most attractive places to stroll in Montevideo. Due to its small size, this iconic neighborhood is ideal for walking, with its artisan stalls and pedestrian streets. There are certainly more places in Montevideo's Old City that you should visit, but these are the ones we recommend: 1. Pedestrian and Sarandi breakwater As the name suggests, this is one of the most important and busiest pedestrian streets in Montevideo. It runs through the Ciudad Vieja neighborhood from end to end and begins in Independence Square up to the Sarandí breakwater. Here you can find a large number of shops to buy gifts and souvenirs, good quality restaurants and many artisan stalls to enjoy. At the end of the tour, we find the Sarandí breakwater, one of the most beautiful places in the city. This place is recommended to visit during the afternoon to see the beautiful sunset in Montevideo 2. Plaza Zabala This square is named after the founder of the city of Montevideo, Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, and is located just 100 meters from the pedestrian Sarandí. The square is one of the most beautiful and it is worth taking a few minutes to rest from our tour and contemplate a small green space within the city. In the center of the square, we find the monument to Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, inaugurated in 1931. 3. Plaza Matriz Opposite the Montevideo Cathedral, this place is one of the most visited in Montevideo due to its location. It is inevitable to tour the Old City and not find this beautiful square that, in addition to its green space and architectural importance, has some good restaurants to stop for lunch. During the day, an antiques fair is held on this historic square where you will find antique objects that will leave you perplexed! 4. Port Market If you didn't stop for lunch at the Plaza Matriz in the restaurants on the Sarandí Pedestrian Street, you did well, because the Port Market is the place to go. This market is one of the city's main gastronomic attractions, as well as a historical landmark of Montevideo. Built in 1865, the Port Market is the promenade par excellence if you want a pleasant and very tasty atmosphere. A very good selection of restaurants will be at your disposal to taste the best Uruguayan meats. If you have time and want to have lunch here, I recommend visiting more than one restaurant and being able to snack on some appetizers in each, always accompanied by a drink. I forgot! You shouldn't leave without trying at least one glass of "medio y medio Roldós", one of Uruguay's typical drinks. 5. Plaza Independencia This square is the heart of Montevideo and is located on the border of downtown and the old city. Here, in addition to contemplating the square and the monument to José Gervasio Artigas, we have to enjoy the Salvo Palace, one of the most important historical architectural works in Uruguay. Another important attraction that we can see in Plaza Independencia is the gate of the Ciudadela, an old gate that gave entrance to the old Montevideo, for me the most representative of the city. 6. Metropolitan Cathedral of Montevideo This cathedral, also known as the Mother Church of Montevideo, is located on Ituzaingó and Sarandí streets. This church has its beginnings in the year 1740 when a brick construction was built, which later and after numerous modifications is today the Cathedral of Montevideo. Since 1975, it has been part of the National Historic Monument and one of the most visited places by tourists arriving in the city. 7. Cabildo of Montevideo The Cabildo was the place where the 1830 constitution was sworn in, and is today one of the most valuable historical sites in Uruguay. Like the Iglesia Matriz, this place was declared a National Historic Monument in 1975. Currently, the Cabildo de Montevideo Museum and Historical Archive operates in the building, one of the most interesting museums in terms of the country's independence history. If you love history or architecture, here you can find plans of the city's beginnings centuries ago. 8. Solis Theater Conceived and designed just ten years after the Constitution was sworn in, the Solís Theater has since been a witness to and protagonist of the country's history. Located in a Montevideo hinge space between the old and new city, today we find to its left the building of the Presidency of the Republic, inserted in a gastronomic, cultural and artistic circuit of the city. Inaugurated in 1856 after the so-called Great War as a corporation, in 1937 it was bought by the Municipality of Montevideo and became a public theater, thus launching the first public cultural policies at the service of citizens.
