Follow us @actonpark_eagleretreat The space From the moment you drive through the gateway into our secluded bushland home, you will start to absorb the peace and tranquillity that prevails. Venturing up the steep winding driveway brings you ever higher through the eucalypt forest, with glimpses of wallabies, echidnas, and maybe even the resident family of Wedge-tailed Eagles soaring above. Nothing prepares you for stepping onto the path to your apartment door and gazing at the sweeping vista of the southeastern coastline spread out below over the tops of the majestic trees. It is hard to believe that just a 25-minute drive will have you in the center of Hobart with its famous waterfront and Salamanca Place, and 15 minutes will bring you to Hobart Airport. Your beautiful apartment features a large bedroom/living space with four huge windows facing the view and bush, a luxurious bathroom, and a small but well-appointed kitchen. And of course, you can relax in comfortable outdoor seats to immerse yourself in the view, or as dusk nears, enjoy watching the wallabies and pademelons that visit every evening. The driveway into the heart of our sanctuary could be thought a challenge by some - steep and narrow, winding up through the bush – but we love the adventure of it and the way it forces us to slow down and begin relaxing into the peace and tranquillity of our home. We suggest you use a low gear and drive slowly, which also ensures the safety of any wildlife that could well be sharing the use of the road! Once at the top access is along a paved way past your host’s house and the front windows of the apartment, followed by lockbox access (contactless if you wish, or with a welcome in person from the host) into the apartment itself. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking, with a coffee maker and milk frother for convenience, and stocked with olive oil, salt and pepper, vegemite (an Australian essential!), Tasmanian honey and jam, and in the fridge fresh Ashgrove milk – and/or non-dairy milk on request. It also houses a washing machine in case you need to deal with some laundry during your stay. Your outdoor shade umbrella repurposes as a clothesline, and indoor drying racks are provided. The large bedroom/living space has a king-sized bed facing the windows and that amazing view. Two comfortable recliners and a café-style table and chairs complete the furnishings, allowing you to sleep, relax, eat, and just be comfortable all while soaking up the vision from outside. When you want to exclude the sun or keep the warmth in the room, thick curtains will completely cover all the windows and give you a cozy space for simply relaxing. A large walk-in wardrobe opens off the bedroom providing all the room you could need for your belongings, however long your stay. For indoor entertainment a smart tv is connected to both local free-to-air channels and the internet through a dedicated Guest network WIFI, enabling use of streaming platforms of your choice. For outdoor entertainment simply walk out the door! You can choose to relax completely while watching the resident birds and marsupials, and beyond the view of the ocean and coastline, Roches Beach just below through to the Tasman Peninsula on the far eastern horizon. Alternatively, a short walk (up a fairly steep slope, on well-marked tracks) brings you to the top of the hill where 360-degree views of the southeast can be enjoyed. Features include kunanyi/Mt Wellington and nipaluna/Hobart to the west, often providing spectacular sunsets that are well worth the walk. Guest access The heart of our sanctuary is a cleared area nestled in the bush and sheltered from the prevailing winds by the hilltop to the west and south. We have the advantages of relative isolation – total privacy, no close neighbours, genuine interaction with a wild bush setting - which necessitates entrance via a lengthy driveway. Once the house is reached there is a large bitumen car turning and parking area with easy access to the pathway leading to the apartment's front door. You may park anywhere in the space between the house and the garage, and follow the paved way along the front of the host’s house. This then becomes a pebbled pathway turning to the left around the apartment windows and left again to your door. A lockbox contains the front door key, opened by the combination supplied before arrival. We ask that you replace the key in the lockbox when you go out. Guests have access to their apartment and the entire property, with the exception of the host's house and garage and its immediate surroundings on the sides away from the guest apartment. Please be aware that this is a large space of native Tasmanian bushland, almost completely untouched by human hands, and presents rough bush walking conditions once off the obvious track to the top of the hill. The native wildlife has a right of way and must be respected by guests. Other things to note The apartment is designated for up to two adult guests, with a minimum stay period of two nights which may be extended at some periods of the year. The distance of the property from the public street means our water supply is supplied mainly from rainwater stored in two large tanks, and our wastewater system is a septic tank. While the water has always been beautiful and fresh, it is not considered safe to drink as it comes from the tap and must be boiled before consumption. We supply an initial jug of boiled tap water in the fridge for drinking, which can easily be replenished by boiling an electric jug full and allowing it to cool. The septic tank is an effective waste disposal system, but its operation can be compromised by inappropriate items being flushed down the toilet. Only minimal amounts of toilet paper are appropriate. A rubbish bin and bags are provided for the disposal of sanitary products. The driveway into the property from where it leaves Thredbo Drive is sealed for about three-quarters of its length to the parking area, but some sealed areas and the gravel road that completes it, are quite rough as well as narrow and steep. We reiterate that you should please take care, go slowly, pay attention to the road and any wildlife, and contact your host immediately if you have any uncertainty or difficulty.
