Since we're a bit partial, we thought a brief explanation from Memphis Travel's site description might be a good summary of our 'hood: Cooper-Young is one of Memphis' most vibrant and active neighborhoods, with a storied history of art, music, and markets. Johnny Cash recorded his first album in the basement of the Galloway Church here, and the state's largest art festival is held here every year. Today when you visit, you can see historic homes - most were built before 1915 and the neighborhood is a part of the National Register of Historic Places - and enjoy a plethora of restaurants, bars, shops, and galleries. It's the perfect place to wander and explore, and to get to know Memphis a little better.
