Description

Nestled among the hills on the charming island of Vieques and overlooking the ocean, you will find our eco-tree house: Pajuil. The house is an open Caribbean loft combining a rustic feel with comfort and charm. This treehouse-like structure is cuddled by treetops of our native tropical forest, flowers and fruit orchard. Designed as an eco-home using some harvested local woods, running on solar power and respecting the natural surroundings, it is an idyllic place to connect with nature. The space Named after our “pajuil” tree (cashew nut), a tree native to tropical America and cherished on the island. Details of the house were handcrafted with love. On the first level, you will find the entrance deck, the living and dining room with high ceilings, the bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and a spacious balcony with a dining table overlooking the Atlantic ocean. From the wide kitchen window, you can also enjoy watching the ocean while cooking. The second story is a mezzanine which features a comfy full-size bed and a hammock, and also enjoys the ocean view. Our tropical home is fully enclosed by mosquito screens including the entrance and balcony doors. The house has wifi. Pajuil is located in Monte Carmelo only a 6-minute drive to the entrance of the Fish and Wildlife Refuge where you will find all the iconic beaches: Caracas, La Chiva, etc.. Also, it is strategically situated: only a 7-minute drive from downtown Isabel Segunda (ferry terminal and supermarkets) and a 11-drive to Esperanza where you can find a boardwalk and many restaurants. If you enjoy nature walks, just a 5-minute walk from the house you can access one of the trails of Fish and Wildlife Refuge, and see other panoramic views of the north and south shores of the island. Guest access The road to the house is a rural unpaved road, preserving the adventurous Vieques experience, but it is not suited for rental cars. Rental cars must be parked on the paved road above ours and it is a very short walk down to the house (less than 3 minutes). The path to the house goes down a walkway similar to what you will find in a nature trail. We do not find it difficult but it is better suited to guests that are able to and enjoy hiking and rural settings. This is what makes our house special because of the secluded atmosphere it provides. You will rarely hear a vehicle passing by. It is what we love about our little corner of Vieques. Other things to note Remember we have built a house preserving the native forest and with minimal impact to the surroundings, so it is an area inhabited by nature. If you are looking to stay in a well-designed and carefully built cozy rustic cottage in a beautiful natural setting, our house is the place for you. But if you are expecting a hotel accommodation or a more urban setting, you should not consider our house for your stay. If you see the common gecko, the native coquí frog or any beetles, don’t be frightened. Remember this is their natural habitat and we are sharing it with them. It is important to note that our house is completely self-sufficient (off the grid). Water is provided by rain-water collection in a large sealed 3,000 gallon ferrocement tank, which keeps water fresh and filtered by sedimentation. Water is fed to the house by gravity alone, using oversized plumbing (2") to keep it running smoothly without the need for pumps. This means that the water system is fully functional but it does not have the pressure you will find in a hotel. Our house is fully powered by the sun. As with any self-sufficient house, our guests must pay attention to energy use. Simple things like turning off lights and fans when not needed and avoiding the use of high amperage devices like electric hair dryers, especially during the hours when the sun is not out. Water is also heated by the sun. And Vieques has plenty of it. But sometimes there might be rainy days when the water heater cannot do its job. This is usually not a problem as cold water is really not cold, specially in summer, when the heater is usually not needed. This is a very special place that conservation-minded nature-loving people will appreciate. If you are not sure that this type of setting is for you, we would advise you to look for more appropriate accommodations to fit your style. We want to ensure that you enjoy and have everything you need during your stay. We provide: --Cookware - Cooking Utensils - Dishes - Cutlery - Moka Coffee Maker - French Press - Coffee & Herbal Teas - Olive Oil & Balsamic Vinegar. - Salt, Peper, Brown Sugar & Cinnamon. - Toiletries - Clean, Fresh Bedding - Small Beach Cooler - Beach Chairs - Beach & Bath Towels
