The Gatelodge, Spiddal

Rustic Sophistication - The Gatelodge (formerly the gatelodge to Spiddal House aka Bohoona Lodge, c.1850) is an old style, cosy two bed cottage located on the Connemara coastline with a large, high ceilinged kitchen extension featuring an AGA, two wood burning stoves, a shower room, laundry room, 2 TVs, internet and 2 cosy bedrooms, located only 5 minutes walk from the village, the beach and 30 minutes drive from Connemara National Park. The space The Gate Lodge is an iconic structure of Spiddal, located on the west-side of the village, east of Bohoona. It has been in my family for generations, catering for a number of well known musicians over the years. It was originally a small rustic cottage with low ceilings (do please mind your head) which my parents extended to include a large kitchen extension. The extension was carefully designed to match the style of the original house, and even upon close inspection it is difficult to tell it has been touched at all. The house has access to the beach at Spiddal Pier via a path which leads you along Boluisce river. From there, there are lovely walks along the Connemara coastline both east and west, which take in many local landmarks. The house is located no more than a 30 minute drive from Galway city, and if heading west, the drive from Inverin to Leenaun via Maam Cross and beyond take in some of the most stunning landscape in Ireland. Other things to note The Gatelodge is old, quirky, full of style and character and as we have discovered, not to everyone's taste. It is situated in-between a private woodland teeming with wildlife and a sometimes noisy main road. It has steep stairs, low ceilings, old windows, and whilst every effort is made to keep the house clean, nature does tend to find a way in at times. Our refurbishments to The Gatelodge are nearly complete with all windows still requiring replacement. We want our guests to have as pleasant a stay as possible.
