The ‘Hangman’s’ Cottage

Take it easy at this unique and tranquil getaway. Our 16th century traditional thatched Devon Longhouse is perfectly situated between Dartmoor National Park and the stunning South West coastline. The cottage is set right in the heart of Abbotskerswell. It boasts views over to the church and the local pub. There is also a beautiful cafe on our doorstep run by locals. There is a bus stop outside the property to surrounding towns. The space We have a very unique history behind the cottage, it was the birth place to “The man who could not be hung”. Known as John Lee, he is the most infamous Victorian criminal after Jack the Ripper. He was found guilty of the murder for his employer and was sentenced to death. The trap failed to open on several occasions and he was therefore released due to “gods will”. We have literature in the cottage if you are interested in his story! The cottage is a completely self contained annexe on one level. (There are steps to access the property). It is worth mentioning that the annexe is situated within a family home, but noise will be kept to a minimum as much as possible. The accommodation is private. There is an outside seating area in our pretty cottage garden which guests will have access to. Bath and hand towels will be provided along with bed linen and blankets. We are nestled between the moors and the sea and are a 15 minute drive to the “English Riviera” with stunning beaches in Torquay and Paignton. We are a short drive from the South Hams with beautiful beaches and great surfing in Bantham and Bigbury. We are also within a 20 minute drive to Dartmoor National Park with lovely scenery, tors to climb, and country pubs to explore. Other things to note Please note: The cottage sleeps two guests (in two single beds). We can accommodate one extra guest if providing own bed/ travel cot and bedding. We can provide extra towels upon request. The cost for a third guest is £25 per night. We DO NOT have a sofa bed in our property.
