Other things to note Voros is a village in the Municipality of Phaistos, and is located 62 km southwest of Heraklion, in the plain of Messara. In the census of "Kastrofylakas", in 1583 Vorus is mentioned with 312 inhabitants. As for the origin of its name, one version wants it to come from its geographical location, it is located north of Phaistos and the inhabitants were called Northerners, a name that was maintained during the Venetian rule Vorus (Northerners). Of course, there is the other version that wants the name to come from Voros, grandson of the King of Phaistos Radamanthys. The village has been continuously inhabited from the Early Minoan period until today, while for as long as Phaistos was the capital of Messara, Voros was under its influence. In the chapel of Agios Onoufrios, near the entrance of the village, there are samples of early Minoan pottery, while in the village we also find ruins of the Hellenistic and Roman era. From the beginning of the Venetian rule until the middle of the 20th century, Voros was the capital of the province of Pyrgiotissa. During the Turkish occupation, according to residents' stories, there were only three houses with Turkish families, while in 1881 the Turkish census does not mention any Turkish residents in the village. Since 1898 the village has been the center of the mission of the Italian Archaeological School headed by E. Haberr and L. Pernier. During the German occupation there was a German guard in the village, many residents were forced to work for the construction of the airport in Tympaki, while two of them were executed for their resistance. After World War II, construction began elsewhere in the settlement, in Panochori, while the old district was declared a conservation area. In 1972 the Cultural Association of Mesara was founded with its headquarters in Voros, with the aim of studying the folk culture and natural history of Crete and in 1973 the Museum of Cretan Ethnology was founded, hosting exhibits from the daily life of the Cretans, over the years. In the village there are the churches of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, Agia Pelagia, located in the old district, the two-aisled church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Konstantinos & Eleni, in the courtyard of this church there is a marble column with a relief representation of Greece crowning the heroes. There are also the churches of Christ, built in memory of Emm. Nikolidakis, who was executed by the Germans in the prison of Agia Chania, Saint Andrew of Jerusalem, hymnographer of the Archbishop of Crete, Saint George of Kontaras, built in the 14th century, Saint Paraskevi, Saint Onoufrios, Saint Phanourios and Panagia Kardiotissa, which belongs as a dependency to the Holy Monastery of Kalyvani, but is operated by the priest of Voros.
